Binary-G
Thanks to all of the info in this forum and on the osx86project site, I now have OS X 10.4.6 up and running on my WinXP Dell Dimension 4550. Everything works great!!! I used the method: DOS> DISKPART DISKPART> Select disk 2 DISKPART> create partition primary id=af DOS> dd if="tiger-x86-flat.img" of=\\.\PhysicalDrive2 bs=1M --progress Copy chain0 to your root drive (C:\). Add C:\chain0=”Mac OS X” to boot.ini Boot into OS X This got me up and running in about 6 minutes flat!!! However... This method creates a 6GB partition for OS X, and I can't figure out how to resize the partition to use the entire 40GB drive. I've tried Disk Utilities, CarbonCopy Cloner, Partition Magic, Diskpart, MacDrive and a host of other methods, but none allow the resize of the system volume. The closest was Diskpart which performed the resize, but Chain0 would no longer boot OS X. The only conclusion I have left is to boot on a OS X bootable CD/DVD, then use Disk Utilities to resize the HD partition. The main reason to expand the partition is to install iLife. For some silly reason, iLife insists on being installed on the system volume, and even though I created a 2nd partition of 34GB on that drive, and moved my USERS folders to that drive, it still wants to install on the system drive. So this leaves me with two options: 1. Create a OS X bootable CD/DVD that works on a Wintel box and boot from that, use Disk Utilities to resize the HD partition from 6GB to 40GB, then boot normally, or 2. Convince iLife to install on the 2nd Mac 34GB partition. Unfortunatley, I can't figure out how to do either. Any assistance is appreciated. 01000111 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/23044-up-and-running-but-need-to-resize-system-volume-partition/ Share on other sites
Rammjet
I don't know of any way to resize an existing boot volume under MacOSX right now. You could download one of the 10.4.6 installers and install to any size partition you wish. Using what you currently have, you could set up the partitions as 34 GB and 6 GB. DD the OSX to the 6 GB partition and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it over to the 34 GB partition. Then boot to the 34 GB partition. CCC just copies files, it doesn't do anything with partition size or boot records. I have previously used CCC to copy the system volume to a partition on a different drive, but that wouldn't boot. I didn't try copying to the 34GB partition. I'll give it a go and let you know what happens... 01000111 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/23044-up-and-running-but-need-to-resize-system-volume-partition/#findComment-152658 Share on other sites
Rammjet
Be sure to set up the partition just like you did for the 6 GB one - ID=AF and set active. Binary-G
Be sure to set up the partition just like you did for the 6 GB one - ID=AF and set active. Saddly this didn't work. I created the 34GB partition with ID=AF. Ran CCC and copied everything from the 6GB part to the 34GB part. Booted to WinXP, marked the 34GB part as active and deleted the 6GB part (to make sure Chain0 didn't boot from the 6GB part) and tried to boot to OS X, but received a Chain0 boot error. Rammjet
The first time I installed OSX, I installed OSX on two partitions so that I could tweak one and know that I had another to boot from. When I was done, I used CCC to replace the 2nd one so it was up-to-date. I used Acronis bootloader and it worked fine. Maybe another bootloader is in order. If that doesn't work, I'll try Acronis. Thanks! ...watch this space... Try Apple Disk Utility make a disc image of your current Mac harddisc and then copy it with the restore function to your new partition/HD and it boots up perfectly Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/23044-up-and-running-but-need-to-resize-system-volume-partition/#findComment-152788 Share on other sites

Thanks. I just tried using CCC to clone the system partition to another partition on another hard drive, then told BootMagic to boot from there, but no good... Another thought... Is there a location requirement for boot partitions? I've been using a 7GB partition at the end of a 140GB drive. Does the OS X boot partition have to be at the beginning or in the first xGB of a drive in order to boot? o1ooo111 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/23044-up-and-running-but-need-to-resize-system-volume-partition/#findComment-152806 Share on other sites

Mac... Backup... but it must boot from any partition after you try the method with Disk Utility.. I use Acronis OS Selector to easily choose my operating system btw...
