Yes, i have noticed that it becomes faster but I am still seeing this color wheel too often :E Hopefully is fully gone someday..

Have you tried different plaform setting? I cant see any difference there. Have tried platform=ACPI and PLATFORM=X86PC

Hmm, is there anything we can try? maybe 1.0.4.7 update.. last time it lost my wifi card.. or is there anyone who can help? :-)

To me it seems that this problem can be solved.. cos when it works it works really fast.. (and just when you think like that hdd led lights on.. and there you are again.)

Some kext is still there making things lag?

Edit: Hmm.. will try this when i get home. Pausing os problem.

Ok, 1.0.4.7 installed without problems. Also tried to use "idlehalt=0 cpus=1" but nothing really happens, same color circle is still here.

I dont know what does it do with hd but when i use itunes and play files from same hd where os x is, it starts skipping when hd led goes on(and that circle appears).. if i play them from external drive it works well without skipps or so.

  • 3 weeks later...

While hacking away on a solution for a dongle-free bootup into GMA900 built-in LCD, I came across an user who claimed that his laptop (also 915 chipset) worked fine with 10.4.1 and then when he installed 10.4.5 he needed the dongle.

Well... I had to investigate that out. So I spent a few days finding, then getting Marklar-Tiger.dmg (you still remember that?) and then also the Generic-install-ppf-Release1.dmg (remember that too?).

Patched, checksumed, and ready to rock.

So here's the bottom line:

The laptop's 915 chipset is not detected with the plain kexts from 10.4.1 and uses normal VESA 1024x768. Profiler indicates no kext loaded. No QE nor CI. There ya go. But it sure does boot without the dongle!!

I might as well move my 915 kext to the Extensions.disabled and boot via VESA if I am only going to do programming stuff.

EDIT: BTW... 10.4.1 had really slow boot as well and lots of beachballs too during system use. So, 10.4.1 and 10.4.4/5 has these beachballs. I still don't know what causes them to appear in abundance.

If I do that, will it use the linear framebuffer kext? Is it possible to get 1280x800 from it?

Hi troisd,

I've got an Acer TravelMate 2414. I think i've got exactly the same spec as yours - same chipset, cpu, sound, lan, video and wifi.

I installed from the JaS 10.4.7 disk. Everything runs really well, boots quickly and not much beachball and I still only have 256MB Ram. :)

I get 59.97 in Xbench without disabling Beam sync & turning 2D Quartz Extreme on. Unless its modified by default on the JaS 10.4.7 disk?

The only thing not working is the Atheros AR5005G wireless card. Did yours work without any modifing of kexts etc?

Thanks

Oh boy... here we go again... gonna start downloading Jas 10.4.7. From your description it looks like a mighty good install and performance. I only got 55+ on Xbench when I disabled beamsync and turned on QE2D. And only 256MB??? I had 512MB and it was a slow boot (about 40-60 seconds to get past the progress bar) and many beachballs everytime I started to type something.

I'll admit, I installed Universal 10.4.5 and never did an upgrade to 10.4.6 nor 10.4.7. It's worth a shot.

And yes, my Atheros AR5005G worked right off the bat. It should work.

No more beachballs. Fast bootup. Fast system response. Excellent XBench score.

But... you need to invest $$$ on faster hard drive. Guilty part: 4200RPM hard disk.

You should do this.

Thanks for your 5400RPM test report.

  • 4 months later...

Acer Aspire 3624WXCi with 900 GMA, 512MB RAM, and 5400RPM WD HDD purchased based on TroisD's suggestion.

10.4.8 JaS install runs at wicked speed (a lot more responsive than the preloaded WinXP even did). I'm still on my external monitor (can't find a paperclip, will do so later). Sound was fixed after permissions changed on AppleAudioAC97.kext or other. EDIT: It works when I boot up with paperclips installed. Will buy a dummy d-sub head and wire it together so it's not so flimsy.

My wifi hasn't worked yet. Any help available? Keep in mind I installed straight from JaS 10.4.8 My only form of internet right now (currently typing this from the iAcer) is via ethernet cable. How do I ensure that my WLAN chipset is the Atheros one? EDIT: I've tried loading kexts in my own. I set used the diskutil to repair, permissions, and loaded, but couldn't get it detected. Do I have to download a different version? Do I have to reinstall?

One thing I miss about XP was that the Touchpad would scroll when I ran down the side of it (oh, my keyboard and trackpad worked right off the bat).
