jay4321 Posted June 23, 2010 Share Posted June 23, 2010 Hey all. Getting set up to build my first Hackint0sh, and suffering from a little bit of overload with all of the information out there. I’m a very experienced PC builder, and familiar with friends’ OSX68 projects, but haven’t done one for myself from start to finish. I need to start somewhere and I’ve done my best reading through various guides and FAQs, hoping for some help with the big picture. I have on hand what appears to be compatible hardware already, on a 2007-era setup which suits my needs fine. My current Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L is failing (spotty Ethernet, USB and other things cutting out), but I have a brand new one ready to go to replace it I’d bought cheap. I’ve listed my hardware and software below. How I typically use my computer, why I’m interested in OSX, and what I’m trying to accomplish: On my Windows 7 drive I typically use Photoshop CS3 for work, play poker, and occasionally pick up a game to play, plus do all of my routine surfing, Word, etc. On my smaller SSD I have XP32 loaded with Pro Tools and a little music software I’m still learning how to use properly. My big bulk contains backups for both plus storage. My dream for OSX would be to use it for all of my routine surfing, email, ITunes, and maybe later on get a music studio app running on that and abandon XP. A nice & easy, safer enviroment for doing random things that works really well. I don't have any real issues with W7 and could continue using that as needed. Hardware on hand: PSU: Corsair 620w CPU: Intel Q6600, B3 step RAM: 4 x 1g Kingston DDR2-800 (5-5-5-16) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (revision 2) – still have new Hard drives (3): Intel 40GB SSD Crucial 64GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi 7200 Monitor: I-Inc 28”, has DVI and HDMI. 1920 x 1200. Video card: Older EVGA 7900 GS (very expendable/will likely upgrade) Logitech wireless mouse & keyboard Software on hand: Windows 7 Home 64-bit OEM Windows XP Home 32-bit OEM Snow Leopard OSX 10.6 Actual questions: Question 1: Since my specific board is a couple of years old the install guides are usually circa 2008, and generally pre-Snow Leopard. Can someone recommend the most appropriate guide given my setup? Question 2: Updating my video card to something in the $120-$150 range. Anything especially recommended, or things I should avoid? Question 3: Using a non-Apple mouse and keyboard, yay or nay? Question 4: I haven’t seen all that much on OSX running on SSDs. Anything I need to know? Question 5: Based on what you see, any general things jump out at you I need to think about? Thanks for any help.
