Hey Guys,

I am kind of desperate here, i am trying to installing snow leopard now for the last 7 days, and i can't get it running. :)

I am not really a newbie on this topic, cause i have successfully installed snow on a Sony Vaio, and a Dell XPS420.

On my own machine a XPS630i i can't get it running, then only if i install it on my usb hard drive. Kinda annoying because i can't see my hard drives wen i am in OSX, just the usb drives.

Okay, i have tried, hazard, iAtkos 3, usb methods, followed up some "guides" but non of them work cry.png

Keep getting a error that tells me he could not enumerate a device.

"The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device"

Is there a smart man inhere that can help me out? I would be so happy to get it up and running in any possible way.....

Thanks in advance to all that gonna look at it....cpuz settings are in the attachments

My system specs are:

PC: Dell XPS 630i Processor type Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz| System chipset NVIDIA® nForce 650i SLI Northbridge C55 Southbridge MCP51 BIOS chip 8 MB | Graphics Card Nvidia Gforce GTS 240 | Memmorie 8gb | More Info

How can you have a Dell XPS 630i when CPU-Z says it is a 650i chipset.........?

Presuming it is a 650i chipset, follow my nForce chipset/Intel CPU MOBO Snow Leopard Retail OS X DVD Install Guide, or my iATKOS S3 v2 distro install guide, or if you must, my Hazard distro install guide, in my blog........ :)

I don't know, maybe ask Dell? If you see the specs i added of the original spect of my puter u will see its a 630i, for all i know there are 2 variants in that, the 630 and 630i. Dell designed these computers after they bought Alienware, its kind of Alienware model the 630i. But fact is, that i have allot of issues with this computer. My Computer

For example i can't make a switch in the bios that can put my HDD on IDE nor ICHA. They have ripped out his option in the bios, because Dell think all machines they sell will carrie an NT based Operating System.....yeah i know that is a problem, i have learned that yesterday.

If this is the problem i have can you inform me on that? So my disks are always in raid, if i switch them off the computer is gonna cry it needs a RAID setup :S The bios options are really small and can't change much. Only extra in the bios are the overclocking section, but thats not the thing i want to change.

Okay, the iAtkos DVD isn't even booting up, i am getting a writing error, so my computer cant write it to my hard drive. They told on the forum from iAtkos i have to put it on a thumb drive from 8 gigs, and so i did. The thumb is giving me issues too, i cant see my HDD for example. It only shows my USB connections, thats not what i want, i have snow leopard 10.6.4 running on my USB HDD. I want it on my hard drive but no way the installer shows me my hard drives. This is an issue i have with all thumb drives i have made to make snow running. So no hard drives detected wen i boot up with my thumbdrive.

iAtkos boot command i use to boot up thumb drive iAtkos V2: -v arch=i386 cpus=1

This count for all other several thumbs, and trust me i used all sorta commands to boot up, but every time i get to see the USB Connections........

In my computer are 3 disks, 3x 500GIGs, Departed into 6 partitions and 1 external drive that runs Snow Leopard 10.4.6

On USB: Snow Leopard 10.6.4

On HDD1: Linux Mint

On HDD2: Leopard 10.5.8

On HDD3: Windows 7

This is a multi boot running on Chameleon 2 RC4 (Yeah running 4 x OS)

Computer startup:

1 Optical Drive

2 USB Device

3 Hard drive

4 Disabled

So any options left for me? Or do i just need to trow away my MOBO? I am getting really anoyed about this matter, i have installed all kind of computers with snow on it, but my own computer refuses it, and i really dont know why.

Today i am going to try out your Guide, just not the one from iAtkos because my computer will not boot the DVD. So i need to follow your first guide. Or the Hazar guide.

But i feel the out comming already, hey gonna tell e he could not enumerate a device, like all installations that are successful on my computer. The moment i boot up for the first time and i did a fresh install it will say: IOUSBfamily did not enumerate a device. Maybe you heard this before?

Maybe you can point me out in the right direction?

Maybe you should know, that Leopard 10.5.8 does install on my hard drive successfully, look at second drive. Its just that Snow giving me Huge problems and dont want to be installed on my machine.

Much thanks Verdant....

I only asked because the 630i chip is AHCI-compliant but not the 650i chipset........so the 630i cannot use AppleNForceATA.kext but the 650i does.......

Is your DVDRW SATA or PATA?

If Leopard 10.5.8 is running successfully on your Dell 630i, then it does not appear be a BIOS issue for your internal HDDs (as RAID mode in some BIOS implicitly switches on AHCI mode) but tell me are all your internal HDDs SATA?

As for "IOUSBfamily did not enumerate a device. " error:

1. In your BIOS can you set USB Legacy Device Support or similar to [Enabled]........?

2. In your USB flash drive and USB HDD com.apple.Boot.plist files in /Extra, include

<key>USBBusFix</key>
<string>Yes</string>

Hey Verdante

I have a DVDRW SATA build in.

I have installed hazard again according tou your guide and added the bootstring USBBusFix to com.apple.Boot.plist and still no enumerate device fix, the error still there if i boot in.

As far the USB i can only set in on or off in bios, if i set it off, my keyboard and mouse don't work no more.

My disks are:

1 IDE

3 SATA

and trying to put snow on the IDE disk. Or do you suggest otherwise?

Thanks in advance,

You should note that with MeDevil's AppleNForceATA.kext_Test, you can read from SATA DVDRW (but generally cannot write to) but you have to put maxmem=3072 in your com.apple.Boot.plist...........alternatively, you can use slashack's AppleNForceATA.kext to allow access to 8GB RAM but will typically then have no workable/reliable access to your SATA DVDRW.......

I assume that your IDE HDD is jumper-set as Master since you do not have a IDE DVDRW.........if you could use a PATA (IDE) DVDRW set as Master and a SATA HDD, it is the best combination on nForce chipset MOBOs..........but PATA DVDRW and HDD set as Master and Slave respectively should also work.......

I am assuming that you have Boot Other Device enabled in BIOS and have set Floppy Drive to OFF in BIOS......and have then attempted to buot your USB HDD via the BIOS Boot Menu accessed by pressed/releasing F12 until the Boot menu appears ).........

Hey Verdant

Well i tried it all, even your suggestion for the test kext, but no way its running, i am giving up......i think i did like 200 installs this week, all 200 didn't run 1 time. So maybe it's best i just keep Snow running from USB.

Even an IDE DVD drive didn't solve the problem, still keep getting that anoying frase "IOUSBfamily could not enumerate a device ( on port 2)" I saw that line on every successful install (that was from the Hazard DVD 6.2) I hate that error now grrr....

If you have any suggetions than let me know....thanks for the help Verdant.

How is the USB Host Controller Location: seen in System Profiler..........as Built-in USB or not? It may be worth checking the USB sections in your DSDT.aml file.........

Okay Verdant, my usb is build in, so its direct on my motherboard, accept 2, they are connected with a wire to my motherboard, 2 of them. If i pull them out my motherboard it will reply that 2 usb connections are not connected.

If that is the case what you said, can you tell me how i change that DSDT.aml file?

Isn't there any way to check why leopard does let itself installing on my computer and snow not?

Thanks again

Have you tried using Leopard to install from a Snow Leoaprd Install DVD image file by running OSInstall.mpkg from Leopard to install SL to another HDD/volume........?

Zip up your DSDT.aml file and PM me a download link.......I will take a look at it......

Hey Verdant,

I have done a clean install of Hazard (by your guide) and did a dsdt patch on snow hazard 6.2 from out Leopard 5.8, added is the dstd file and boot.plist.

Note: Zip-file can be found in Attachments.

And yes i can install a retail dvd on a other from-out Leopard.....why? you have ideas?? :P

Let me know if you find some weird stuff in it :P

Simply that since you can boot into Leopard without any problem, just use Disk Utility to restore a Retail Mac OS X 10.6 Install DVD .dmg/.iso image file to a temporary OS X SL Retail DVD Installer folder (use OSX_SL) from which to run the SL Installer............mount the Snow Leopard .dmg/.iso file......an installer pop-up window will appear......now click on any free-space region within the window/Desktop and then go to top menu bar and click on Go > Go to Folder......a pop-up window will appear….in the window entry box, type

Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/

And click on Go......in the next window that appears, find the OSInstall.mpkg file/icon and double-click this package file to start your Snow leopard Installation......Note that the above procedure for installing to a GPT/HFS+ volume.......the procedure for installing to a MBR/HFS+ volume is as follows:

Get the OSInstall.mpkg and OSInstall Unix executable file for MBR installation and backup default versions in the Retail Mac OS X 10.6 Install DVD .dmg/.iso image file.......then replace them with the MBR versions......

In order for you to install or upgrade OS X 10.6 on MBR partitioned hard drive volumes you need a modified OSInstall.mpkg and OSInstall Unix executable file....to obtain these, I can do no better than point you to the links from Prasys' Blog....

There are two versions of OSInstall.mpkg......

Version 1. Prasys believes this version was made by Kabyl, modbin and ToH crew....

Version 2. This version removes checks on CPU , RAM requirements and other things as well, i.e. essentially skips all checks......

The procedure is as follows:

1. Unhide the hidden and systems files in all Leopard directories/folders using Terminal commands or Tinker Tool (see Part C.)

2. Go to Terminal and type

cd /Volumes/OSX_SL/System/Installation/Packages/

sudo mv OSInstall.mpkg OSInstall.mpkg.GPT

cd /Volumes/OSX_SL/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A

sudo mv OSInstall OSInstall.GPT

exit

"I have renamed the original files as shown, as a reminder if ever you wish to revert back to the original GPT installer versions......simply rename the original files by removing the .GPT extensions again via Terminal :

cd /Volumes/OSX_SL/System/Installation/Packages/

sudo mv OSInstall.mpkg.GPT OSInstall.mpkg

cd /Volumes/OSX_SL/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/

sudo mv OSInstall.GPT OSInstall

exit

3. Then either drag and drop (or use cp command via Terminal) the chosen version of OSInstall.mpkg into /Volumes/OSX_SL/System/Installation/Packages/

4. Then drag and drop (or use cp command via Terminal) OSInstall into /Volumes/OSX_SL/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/

5. Close all windows.......

Hey verdant ;)

Sorry that i didn't posted for a wile, but i finaly have snow running on my hdd ;):P

I used MyHack and a retail dvd and a kext named: AppleNForceATA.AnV.kext

I will make a guid for this eventualy, but i have another problem, its just running one core, i tried to look into it, but i am sure i destroy more then i will fix. All i do know, if i dont put a cpus=1 fix in the bootflag it will start very slow, mucha slowwwwww

Can you please look at my dsdt.aml and check if you can let all cores join the party?

Or is there a hack that i can use? If so please help me with this, i have never ever did this befor "Editing an DSDT file"

What is the normal boot time for snow on a machine like this i have???????

I have read some parts about speedstep?? i do know it is in my bios settings and its on, if i switch it of the system will become very slow.

I will add the dsdt.aml in the attachment for you. Thank you so much to look into this one.....am breaking my head now for the last 3 days....

Thanks in advance....

I prepared a patched DSDT.aml file and Boot.plist for you to try and PM'd you them on 22 June.......? Did you not see the PM?

My boot time is 30 seconds........

I have the following BIOS settings:

Execute Disable Bit (XD-Bit) [ENABLED]

Limit CPUID MaxVal [DISABLED]

Enhanced C1 (C1E) [DISABLED]

Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology [DISABLED]

ACPI Suspend Type [s3 (STR)]

ACPI APIC Support [Enabled]

Omg, i didnt see that PM, sorry bout that, okay i am going to try the file now in extra, do i need to remove the cpu=1 bootflag before that time?

And why did you disabled speedstep?

Just replace your current DSDT.aml file and Boot.plist file with the ones I have sent you but keep yours safe for the moment.......you will need DSDT modding of C-states/P-states for speed-stepping to work properly..........DSDT modding of C-states/P-states is not something to be rushed.........

I need to know what you see when booting in verbose mode...........so please use both the DSDT.aml file (put it in /) and the com.apple.Boot.plist file (put it in /Extra) I have PM'd without changing anything and take some screenshots of what you see on booting.........
