if i press the button on and off it says "no bluetooth device present" and stays that way

when the bluetooth light is on in system profiler it lists:

I had the same problem using a MS BT dongle successfully with 10.5.7, but having 10.6.2 not recognize it. I spend many hours trying to get it fixed, and posted here about it a few times. While doing this, I decided to order one of these from eBay, ended up getting it for $1.25USD shipped.

By the time it arrived, I still hadn't found a solution. I replaced the MS one with it and it was recognized in both 10.5.7/8 and 10.6.2. I have had some mouse slugishness issues, but they go away after a while ...

If you don't want to go that route, you may also want to try unplugging and then plugging back in, your current BT dongle. Or accessing the driver from windows and seeing what "Advanced" settings are in the properties tab of that device.
