Replacing kernel 10.5.8

Hi All,

My hackintosh had been running pretty well for almost 1 1/2 yrs. Most recent version had OS 10.5.8 on a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 2) board with Core2Quad processor. The other day, I rebooted with my firewire cam plugged in and kaput. It hangs on startup every time now.

So, I took a 40gig drive and Esata case and installed OS 10.5.1 just to make sure there weren't any hardware issues (after removing the FW card and all extra peripherals/accesories. The "new" drive doesn't have all my installed apps/programs, nor will my iTunes DB fit on it. Is there a way--without wiping out my original HD, to just update the Kernel? I had backed it up using OSx86 Tools a few months ago, but I can't seem to apply the kernel to the drive that is not the startup drive.
