My Problems

Firstly, sorry if this is not the right area to post this in.

Second, I have a few problems. I have installed iDeneb 10.5.6 Leopard. Everything works fine except for a few problems.

My Specs:

Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS

Pentium 4 3.2GHz

2 GB RAM

Motherboard: Intel D865PERL

SoundMAX Digital Integrated Audio

The problems I am having:

1. No sound.

2. In the Display settings, the only resolution option that I can choose is 1024x768, no other options are displayed.

3. I can only boot to my Leopard installation if I boot from the CD. Basically, to start up, I press F8 when prompted to enter boot options, then I specify my hard drive as the boot device (rd=disk0s1) then I do cpus=1 and -v.

I HAVE to boot from the disk like that, otherwise, I get a black screen. Even on Verbose mode, I just get a black screen.

Help for any of these?

Thanks for the sound help.

I don't need a new bootloader, but I tried to do your tutorial anyway, since I wasn't using Chameleon V2.

I must have screwed up somewhere along the line, as I can no longer boot from the DVD OR the Hard drive.

I get a Kernel Panic when booting from the DVD (Says something about NFS), and I just get a blank screen on the hard drive thing.

I did not explain my booting problem well to your before. Basically, it would tell me to either wait 5 seconds for a normal boot, or to press any key to enter boot options. This happened without the DVD, so I did not need a bootloader. For the boot options, I had already configured them into my com.apple.boot.plist thing, and I used "-v -f cpus=1". It would reload all of my kexts, but then when it gets to the -v screen, it just goes blank. Like, imagine I got a Kernel Panic. You know what that looks like, right? That screen has a TON of text on it about Firewire and all that other stuff. Well, it just doesn't come up. My computer seems to freeze before it has a chance to do ANYTHING regarding the kernel.

But for some reason, it worked to boot from the DVD... Now it doesn't. Guess I have to reinstall... again.... <_<

I've come to realize that I really need to be careful. I'd hate to Kernel Panic after having all of my stuff installed and everything. That's like having to reformat (Well, that's basically what it is.).

Okay, reinstalled, same issues. Where do I go from here? I do not need a bootloader. I will try out your audio fixes after I fix the boot.

I did not select any Video kexts in the Custom section of the Installer.

Steps I take to boot:

1. Turn on computer (WITHOUT DVD IN THE DRIVE!!)

2. Do nothing.

3. The Grey Apple screen comes up.

4. It stays there forever, nothing happens. My hard drive light on the front of my computer does not flash at all.

I'm sorry, I'm wording things wrong...

I have a bootloader... Hang on, I'll check to see which one... Chameleon v1.0.12

I can't boot into Safemode or Single-user mode, or into regular mode.

Look, when I type -v, it tells me that it's loading my mach_kernel and stuff, then after that, it's just a black screen. Like, where it usually would say "Kernel Panic" (If you happened to have a kernel panic) DOES NOT COME UP. There is nothing there after loading my mach_kernel stuff. My hard drive light just stops, and nothing happens at all.

For example: Watch this video.

At 0:06, the mach_kernel stuff comes up, same as mine.

At 0:08 however, a TON of other text comes up. I get NONE of that, I just have a blank, black screen that is there until I turn the computer off.

Is the drive MBR or GUID formatted? Did you use Apple Disk Utility on the install DVD to format and partition the drive before installing?

Do you have any other operating systems on the drive?

Do you have another drive in your computer with Windows on it?

It is MBR, I used the Apple Disk Utility on the DVD to format and partition.

There is no other operating system on the drive.

I have a separate hard drive with Windows XP (32-bit) on it that is also hooked up to the PC.

If you don't need the drive to be MBR for some reason, you should always use the GUID partition scheme when installing OS X.

Anyway try this first: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22844

I'm not sure if that's the problem, since you are seeing the Apple logo when not booting with -v. But try it anyway just to make sure, at least it won't do any harm.

btw you should not need to boot with CPUS=1 when using a single core CPU!

Also, yes, don't select any video kexts, you can get the 7600 GS fully working with Chameleon 2.0 and GraphicsEnabler = y in /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist.

I think it's just something wrong with the vanilla kernel, but I don't know which one to use :thumbsup_anim:

Which one is best?

Vanilla - Gave me that blank screen.

Voodoo - Waiting for Root Device

9.2.0 Sleep Kernel - Waiting for Root Device

I don't know what to do! I have an IDE hard drive and an IDE DVD+RW Burner. How do I know which one is master and slave? The ports on my motherboard aren't labeled, and it seems completely random in BIOS.

Hey... In BIOS it says that I have a Primary Master and Slave, AND a Secondary Master and Slave, but on my mother board, there's only 3 ports, and 1 of them, instead of having the top-middle pin missing, it has 2 pins missing in the bottom left-corner area... So really, I only have 2 usable ports for IDE stuff, they are Primary Master, and Secondary Slave. I tried specifying the root device with RD=....

No dice. Any help?

You cannot use the Vanilla kernel on a Pentium 4 system. You should use the Voodoo Kernel.

"Still Waiting for Root Device" means the OS can't see your hard drive, either because it's wrongly configured in the BIOS (or PATA drive jumper settings are wrong) or because there is no driver loaded for it.

The drive at the end of the IDE cable is the master drive.

Do you have PATA and SATA mixed or just PATA drives?

I don't remember how I set up the drive controller configuration in the BIOS on my i865 board, next time I can get to it I'll take a look and let you know.

after a fresh install, the first boot/reboot i do i ALWAYS use option -x safe mode

this has helped me countless times. sometimes its the only way to get in on the first boot and do your thing with kexts, etc before you can boot normally on a regular basis

also try -f to ignore cache on boot

Thank you all, my problems are mostly gone!

I have a couple new ones though:

My Ethernet no longer works, it is detected in the Network setting though and says that it has a "Self-assigned IP Address and may be unable to connect". I have no internet.

My 3.5mm jack earbuds work in my Leopard install, but my USB Logitech Headphones do not. Why?

Thanks!

Edit: My Ethernet is now working!

Edit2: No USB devices other than my Mouse and Keyboard are being detected...

Edit3: No problems here, except that my USB Headphones still do not work... I can change the volume with the little volume button on my headphones though, and they are receiving power.

Okay, updated list of problems:

1. I cannot update past 10.5.2, the combo updates for both 10.5.7 and 10.5.8 have frozen at 14%, regardless of whether or not I am in safe mode.

2. My USB headphones are receiving power, but I can't hear anything out of them on my Hackintosh. They work fine in Windows.
