I tried doing a retail install of snow leopard but i get stuck at still waiting for root device when booting the cd in verbose. I installed snow leopard using hazards installation a little before that and it installed but i booted into verbose and it does the sae thing. I use the flags -v cpus=1 busratio=20

Specs:

Model: Dell Studio 540

Ram:3 GB

Processor:intel core 2 quad Q8200 2.33 GHZ

Video Card: Nvidia Gforce 9800 GT

Sound Card: Intel HDA

Thanks for any help!

It means OS X fails to communicate with your hard drive controller. It's a driver or BIOS configuration issue.

Try google, paste this in the search field:

site:insanelymac.com "still waiting for root device"

check your BIOS and see if there's a setting to configure your SATA drives as AHCI, which should resolve your current issue.

but, if your Dell is like my Inspiron 530S (desktop) and its BIOS doesn't have the AHCI option, set it at IDE and you must install IOATAFamily.kext (search at kexts.com).

having said that, do NOT update to 10.6.3 if you have to use the IOATAFamily.kext because this is leaving my HD with the root device error. The system booted and worked fine with 10.6, 10.6.1, and 10.6.2.
