gwmbox
Hi all , new to the forums and very new to OSx86, only learnt about it today. I last used a Mac many years ago when I had a pizza box LCIII running system 7.2, a lot has chnaged since then. I have been a Windows person since then due mainly to cost of hardware over anything else. So I still like the Mac and the way the OS works but if I may can I ask a few very basic questions (please excuse some of the basic questions I am still reading through the forums looking for specifics). 1. Besides the visual side is there any performance benefits to using OSx86 over Windows 7? 2. The PC's we have are 2 x Quad Core Q6600 with MSI Neo2 MB, 2 x 1TB drives, 4GB DDR2 ram (1066) and a Gigabyte GTX260+ GDDR3 896Mb video card, the third is an AMD Phenom II TRI Core 720 on a Asus M4A78T-E AM3 DDR3 MB with 4GB DDR3 ram (1600) with a Gigabyte GTX260+ GDDR3 896Mb video. Would I be able to get OSx86 on these PC's? 3. I have been reading a number of guides on how to set it up, but I'd like to know what are the recommended best ways to go about this please? 4. Some of the applications in use on the Win 7 PC's are Photoshop, Corel Painter, Lightroom and Corel VideostudioX2, will I get a better performance using OSx86 or should I stay with Win 7? Thanks for your help and advice. EDIT: Oops wrong forum - can a mod move it to the Installations forums please Edited March 16, 2010 by gwmbox Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/213045-can-i-go-osx86-or-not/ Share on other sites
MaX2
1. Yes and no, Mac OS X(86) the booting and shutdown time seem more fast than Windows. However, if we're talking about software performance, they are both equivalent. Many professionals use Mac OS X because of their no virus reputation, but this is not a great fact to own a Mac computer, because their market part make them less interesting for hacker than Windows and the OS is not more secure than Windows. Also, don't forget Windows have a lot of softwares. Finally, don't expect a 100% compatibilty with your system. 2. You may install OSX86 on your intel-based platform for better compatibility 3. Their is no best way, you just need to try some distro. You can start with iAtkos V7 if you want and then you may try a Vanilla approach (if you're able to) 4. No, you will not get better performance on your softwares. Mostly of people here just install OSX86 for the fun or because they want to try some Mac-Only softwares. gwmbox
Thanks MaX2 for your reply, that clears a few things up for me, now to get down and dirty and trial it on one of the intel boxes - just for fun Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/213045-can-i-go-osx86-or-not/#findComment-1429673 Share on other sites
martigasco
I would suggest to at least, give it a try, it's not about being faster or slower, and even not about virus. I thing it's a computer-experience thing (I'm a PC user as well). As for the distro, I would recommend you to try Empire EFI + Snow Leopard retail DVD, if you get results with that, you're very close to a real mac, and the people in this forum are going to help you to make all of your parts work. I would also suggest to try these things in an external usb drive, you can install perfectly on there, and you don't mess up with existing windows installations, and dual booting and so Good Luck!
