What's up everyone?

I recently installed VMWare 3.0 in OSX and successfully installed Windows 7 on it. All drivers were loaded successfully and I am able to browse the web and use all hardware devices while using the virtual Windows 7 machine.

While all that was a success, I have not been able to get the virtual machine (Windows 7) to recognize the workgroup even though the same workgroup name was given. I decided to do a Boo Camp partition and install Windows 7 that way and was also successful. Once booted into Windows 7 via boot cam I am able to see the workgroup without any issues; however, I was wondering if this can also be done while running the virtual Win 7 thru VMWare as I personally would prefer to be able to have both systems running at the same time (simply be able to minimize windows to get back to my mac rather than having to reboot)

Has anyone come across this scenario or knows if its possible?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know for certain if this will help, but you could try changing the network type of the VM. Experiment with all the three options (NAT, Bridged....).

One of them worked for me. Can't remember which.

Hummm. Are you on a Hackintosh or a MAC. I don't see installing Boot Camp on a Hackintosh. Anyway, when you are booted to OSX and running VMware Fusion 3.0x, you should have your VMware network interface configured to Bridged to see you local "workgoup" from the Virtualized Windows machine. This would also apply when running VMware Fusion with a Boot Camp partition running virtualized.

Neil is right, setting the network for the guestOS to bridged should allow your guestOS to be on the same network as your host and other machines on that network. NAT does what a router does, gives the guestOS a local address and does a translation to the public network, i.e. the host's network. But often "windows workgroups" etc. do not handle NATing well.

This is assuming your host LAN has DHCP being delivered, or you allocate an appropriate static IP address.

It is a while since I ran fusion, but this is very much the case for guestOS's under VMware Workstation or Player.
