PM from Semarj, thought it was worth posting so the response is available to all, and Semarj can give us an update regarding progress, Semarj's request below:

Hey man, I am at about the 20th hour of a sort of harebrained scenariao.

I noticed you seem to be in the know about this sort of thing so i'd thought i'd shoot you a quick question ( I noticed another guy got shot down pretty hard for asking a similar question in a similar thread(accused of hijacking))

anyway here goes, I just need you to tell me if this is at all possible

I am trying to get Mac OSX (any flavor) running on my linux box.

My initial strategy has been to use vmware ( I have vmware workstation7.01)

Most of what i've tried has come from here:

Here's what I do have so far:

I have gotten a premade image of Tiger-x86 booted up on vmware( no networking no sound)

I have gotten a snapshot of an image of leopard running(networking but no sound, can't reboot, have to instantiate snapshot)

I have gotten a homemade image from iso to fully install, but can't boot

It seems what you need to know is that i have a Intel core 2 quad cpu q3800 2.5ghz per core

I am not asking you to trouble shoot this for me, but try and point me in the right direction.

I don't need much, just let me know this is not gonna happen, or I need to try a different approach.

The deal is, sound is crucial, the only reason i want to run osx is that I got really stoked about something i saw on reddit called Impromptu (for live coding)

So, i have to have at least decent perfomance and sound ( this means under vmware, vmware tools is a must)

Like i said, I am also willing to dual-boot. At this point, i have been going at it for so long and have chased so many links, a second opinion would be nice. Any sound advice at all would be good.

thanks for your time

OK, forget about the hijacking thing, most of us are happy to have you post in any of the topics, you may be re-directed if we think you might get a better response in another topic!

Also, you only need a running OS X if you do not have VT-x enabled on your PC, a quick check indicates your CPU a Q8300 can come with VT-x or not, probably need to check in the BIOS settings.

If not then go to Zenith432's "Snow Kitty" topic for help, link below. I have VT-x so not tried the method yet.

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1288448

If you have VT-x then Donk's topic below will help:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1186508

or keep an eye on my new topic, this should have a new set of instructions shortly:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1425221If you use a "retail" copy of Leopard or Snow Leopard and install Donk's darwin.iso, i.e. "vmware-darwin-200" with the darwin.iso replaced with the one in "darwin-wks7" installed in to your VMware Workstation 7, and follow the manual all should work well.

You ask about sound, Zenith432 has both a great sound and graphics driver at the following url:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/

The only concern is that under VMware QE is not supported, even with Zenith432's excellent graphics drivers, so if Impromptu if it needs QE will not work under VM W7, and you may have to switch to a dual boot senario, which I am afraid is outside my experience. But if QE is not required, then VMware Workstation 7 is the simplest way to get OS X up and running.

Hope this helps, MSoK!

P.S. Hope you did not mind me posting most of your PM!

MSoK, Thanks for the awesome reply, and no I do not mind my pm being posted.

As an update, I finally gave up on the vmware scenario when I ran into the vmware tools barrier, the performance on the vmk that I did get running was unbearable without it.

So. I ended up using iDeneb 1.3 10.5.5 to do a full install, i figured what the heck, I like linux, my wife likes easy, so...OSX!

ok, Now that I have gotten it all done I have a few questions (BTW, this forum absolutely rocks, many of you helped me without even knowing about it:), it only took me 30+ hours , but I got it going!)) ((!!!!sound!!!))

The main question I have is: Is it possible to legitimize my setup? I have no problem paying for snow leopard if i can somehow be assured it would work and be legal.

Now that I know osx can be installed, I am willing to pay money to have it be on the up and up,...

Thanks again to everyone who has helped build this forum, (and the os86x wiki project)

i can't imagine how long this woulda taken without you guys.

In simple terms no, the reason is Apple's EULA, license agreement only allows OS X to be installed on genuine Apple hardware, basically a MAC! everything else is not legal, the nearest you can get is buy a copy of OS X from Apple, £25.00 UK, €30.00 Europe or $35.00 US, and install a VMware virtual machine with the vanilla kernel based on Donk's topic. This is still not legal, but at least the configuration would be "pure" OS X.

Thanks for your kind comments, on behalf of all the Geek's, Sage's and Legend's on InsanelyMAC!

Is it reasonable to assume I could probably get retail version of snow leopard running on this box?

If you look at my original post, as long as your "box" has VT-x support and enabled in BIOS, then a "retail" copy of Snow Leopard should run fine under VMware Workstation 7.

Cheers,

MSoK!
