nestawasright
I have installed IPC 10.5.6 with Voodoo 9.5.0 on this machine. I want to upgrade to 10.5.8. All the guides I've looked at and tried did not work; anything from not booting or booting to white screen with logo after upgrade. I was wondering if folks would please share known working upgrade procedures, please. I'm trying this now, and have done everything suggested, including changing the Kernel to 9.8.0. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=209192 But having done all that's suggested, I'm not sure if I should go ahead with: a. Apple's combo update b. the ideneb Combo update c. Delta update d. upgrade to 10.5.7 first before going on to 10.5.8 Has anyone tried following Beerkex'd and succeeded? How, please. Beerkex'd
FWIW, my sticky post above only deals with installing the Voodoo kernel itself, in preparation for a System update. As I've said before, it is impossible to write a 'universal update guide', there are just too many unknowns. For that exact reason,as a minimum you should post some information about your hardware. Nobody can help you without this information. You can place it in your signature like I have. Something else you can do is searching the forum for posts by other people with similar hardware to yours to see what they have done. If the search box doesn't work for you, use google with site:insanelymac.com search_term_goes_here What motherboard and CPU do you have, and which patches did you select in 'customize' when you installed iPC 10.5.6? Beerkex'd
You could probably get away with using the iDeneb 10.5.8 updater, but there's no way for me to tell from here. If you run a 10.5.8 Apple update I can tell you for sure that these patches will get overwritten with original versions: Seatbelt.kext 10.5.5 This one is not a problem - seatbelt.kext and kernel version will match after the update because you're already using the 9.8.0 kernel. This is good. Finder 10.5.5 + Keyboard.prefpane I don't know why you need this fix, so I can't say what will happen when the files get replaced with vanilla versions. I've never used it. Are you sure it's necessary on your system? Have you tried installing from the iPC DVD without selecting it? AppleSMBIOS ToH This one will get overwritten with a vanilla AppleSMBIOS.kext and that will probably break things (About This Mac and System Profiler for starters). There's no way for me to know to what extent. I would get rid of this before updating and try to use Chameleon 2.0 RC4 with /Extra/smbios.plist and a vanilla 10.5.6 AppleSMBIOS.kext instead. Read more here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1400949 Legacy NVIDIA drivers These will probably get overwritten and you will lose hardware accelerated graphics. It's not a big problem, you can fix it post install. 10.5.8 will boot up in VESA framebuffer mode, just like when you boot with -x. You might have to fix your injection method too (which one are you using, you mention an enabler?). Intel Pro 10/100 VE driver If this driver is inside the plugins folder of IONetworkingFamily.kext it will probably get overwritten - not sure. But make a backup of it just in case so that you can put it back in. If it's in System/Library/Extensions as a separate kernel extension it should still work after the update, unless the dependencies get screwed because the driver is too old. Then you have to find one that works with 10.5.8. But it's not a serious problem, working LAN is not required to boot OS X. You can fix it post-install. Intel ICHx SATA driver fix - this could be a problem. These will get overwritten and could break compatibility with your SATA controller, resulting in not being able to boot after installing the update. You would get a 'Still Waiting for Root Device' error in verbose mode when trying to boot. Tell me what version ICH controller is on your motherboard, and if you're using SATA or PATA drives (or both). It's important that you find a ICHx driver fix that won't get overwritten by a system update. These usually come in the form of a so-called 'Legacy' or fake "plist-only" kext. Google/forum search for something like this. Besides the patches covered here, it's still possible that other things might get installed during the update that could kill your hackintosh. Some kernel extensions that just happen to be compatible with your system in 10.5.6 versions might not work anymore after updating to 10.5.8. Also, since you're running a distro, some kernel extensions might not be installed at all, those will get installed when running the update and that could kill your Hackintosh too. It's Russian Roulette either way you approach it, as I said there are too many unknowns. You need to find as much information about your hardware as you can. If you can't find someone with the same motherboard as you, break it into parts - Northbridge, Southbridge, LAN, audio, graphics - and search for those separately. If you see some technical word or term that you are unfamiliar with, look it up on Wikipedia or google it. You have to test things and see what makes or breaks a 10.5.8 update on your PC. Always boot with -v (verbose mode) after updating so you can note down or take photos of any error messages. Kernel panics often will give you clues as to what's wrong, for example you might see one or more kernel extensions mentioned. It could take many re-installs but you'll get it eventually. I followed this guide. The enabler I'm using is the "Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards.pkg" I have tried to find out the ICH controller version but perhaps I'm not looking in the right place. I use SATA hard drive. But here's Dell's complete info on it:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600/sm/specs.htm#1084976 Your response has been helpful. It left me with dashing hope. I really don't know how to proceed now. One minute I feel I can do this, the next I feel it's not possible. I've spent 2 weeks on this, at times working 6 hours straight on it. May with this new information, you're able to help further. Thanks so much for all your help. Beerkex'd
Yes, if you don't know what you're doing, updating to 10.5.7 is just as dangerous as updating to 10.5.8. Please edit your post and delete the redundant quotes, we both know what the first post says, there's no need to quote the whole thing three times over... I don't know that I do need Finder 10.5.5 + Keyboard.preFane. I followed this guide. What guide? The enabler I'm using is the "Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards.pkg" So you're using the natit enabler I guess. Check if there's a natit.kext in /System/Library/Extensions I have tried to find out the ICH controller version but perhaps I'm not looking in the right place. I use SATA hard drive. But here's Dell's complete info on it: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...ecs.htm#1084976 Use the information from your link combined with the information on this link to find out which ICH controller you have. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel...tium_4_Chipsets I have followed the link you posted on AppleSMBIOS ToH regarding Cameleon. It's not about AppleSMBIOS Toh, it's about /Extra/smbios.plist Thanks for pointing it out, I can't use this option because I'm usually dual booting. Why not? Dual booting doesn't mean you can't install the Chameleon bootloader and use smbios.plist. Regarding the Ideneb updater, would that be the Delta or Combo update, do you think. It doesn't matter. It's a patched updater for Hackintosh PCs with fixes that might or might not work on your system. You're still required to know which patches to select during the update process. I can't tell you which ones you should pick. This is important, if I complete your guide, posted earlier, and using the Ideneb updater, would I need to apply the patches from that updater, or would following your guide have sort those issues that the patches in that upgrade offer, such as Disabler.kext . I am not familiar with the iDeneb updater so I can't really say anything helpful about it. I don't know what patches are in it. And if you've read my guide, you already know what the Voodoo Kernel can do for you and why I recommend installing it the way I do. If you use the iDeneb updater you shouldn't have to follow my kernel installation guide at all, the updater should come with a copy of the 9.8.0 Voodoo Kernel anyway, assuming it wasn't released before Qoopz put the 9.8.0 Voodoo kernel together. Disabler kext can disable any number of kexts besides the ones that the Voodoo Kernel automatically blacklists. I don't know which kexts your present (if any) Disabler.kext disables or if you even need a Disabler.kext, so, again, I can't say anything conclusive about it.
