cosmicovertones
As far as I know XP has to be installed on a HDD with MBR rather than GUID Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/212090-guid-and-windows-xp/#findComment-1421739 Share on other sites
srs5694
Cosmicovertones is correct; however, it's possible to create a hybrid MBR configuration to make both OS X and Windows happy. In fact, if you use Apple's Disk Utility to create a FAT partition on a GPT disk, Disk Utility will create a hybrid MBR. It's unclear to me from your description, xameleon, precisely what you're doing or how far you're getting, but it sounds like you may already have created the hybrid MBR and are now running into other problems. I suggest you post more details about what you've done and what failure symptoms you're seeing, such as an exact error message. (Note that I'm not an expert on Windows installation problems, so I may not have much to contribute if you post such information.) outragedtony
Windows 7 only supports GPT if you have a native EFI-setup, not with BIOS. Windows XP needs (hybrid) MBR. So, I guess you really have a MBR setup (hybrid or fully), not GUID - Windows 7 and XP would refuse to install otherwise (Some OSx installers come with patched files allowing MBR-only Installations). For your hal.dll problem, maybe this can be of help: Windows XP Setup - Missing HAL.DLL Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/212090-guid-and-windows-xp/#findComment-1422062 Share on other sites

outragedtony
Make it primary? well, repartition... to set the boot-flag, or make it "active", see here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22844 (can be done by running fdisk from windows, too) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/212090-guid-and-windows-xp/#findComment-1422094 Share on other sites

srs5694
Windows 7 only supports GPT if you have a native EFI-setup, not with BIOS.Windows XP needs (hybrid) MBR. One correction of a detail: Windows 7 does support GPT for non-boot disks, whether your system is BIOS-based or EFI-based; Windows 7 running on a BIOS-based computer requires MBR only on its boot disks. When a hybrid MBR is present, Windows 7 favors the MBR side, whereas most other OSes favor the GPT side. There are also versions of Windows XP that support GPT, but they're the 64-bit versions only; the 32-bit versions that most people run don't understand GPT at all, at least not without third-party software. Unfortunately, there's a lot of subtlety about Windows and GPT, and this leads to confusion because simple statements are usually only partially correct. See the Microsoft GPT FAQ for details. Note that it was written prior to the release of Windows 7, but AFAIK Windows 7 is exactly like Vista in its GPT support. outragedtony
thanks for pointing this out. I was only thinking about the support for booting disks. geez, what a mess.
