C3sound
Hello everyone! So game audio middleware and game engines run primarily on PC. Being a sound designer, I run all my audio production tools on MAC. I need to build a computer that has 2 hard drives. 1 for windows, the other for osx. Here is the system recommendations for Unreal Development Kit (from my experience one of the highest taxing engines open to the public right now) Recommended for Content Development: Windows Vista 64 SP2 2.0+ GHz multi-core processor 8 GB System RAM NVIDIA 8000 series or higher graphics card Plenty of HDD space Before this post, I had been in contact with a knowledgeable Hackintosh user on the forums who had posted his proven-to-work build, which I will post here below. The only thing thats missing is a sound card. ----------------------------------------------------------- I can find a list, buy the parts, and throw it together perfectly fine on my own, but to downgrade for cost reasons is a task that I could very well screw up with such a delicate task as part spotting for a hackintosh. I need help seeing where I can shave off this beast to make it more budget friendly. Given the need: the top specifications for UDK, 2 hard drives (one for osx and the other for PC ---- these can be 500GB - 1TB in storage as I have many external drives already), and going as low as a Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 CPU (my current processor), what is you guys' take on it? How much do you think I could really build this for? Feel free to ask questions if you arent sure my intentions with this lovely beast. ------------------------------------------------------------ 2nd Post How about this part list guys, i shaved off around 300 bucks ----- tell me if these parts will work please!!! EricM
Those socket 1366 mobos work on triple channel ram. You wouldn't buy 4x2GB. Either way, I would HIGHLY recommend an i7 860: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...5-214-_-Product And this mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...8-412-_-Product You will be more than happy with this setup and will probably be more future proof with an 1156 board. This should shave off a chunk of change. Benchmarks show the 860 and the 920 fairly close in performance. As for the 2nd list, don't buy that PSU or video!!! That wattage is dangerously low but it could be possible to (just) get you by. The ATI cards have far less support in OSX and I would recommend nVidia if possible... A 9800gt would probably work but I would recommend a GTX something card for game development. P.S. Just my 2 cents, I've had a bad experience with one of Rosewill's power supplies. I would go with a more trusted brand such as Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, OCZ. I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Just don't skimp on the psu, why trust your $1000 parts with 2nd rate power? C3sound
Thank you EricM! Here is the updated list --- Keep the feedback coming guys! What do you think of this list Eric? What do you think of a sound card? I use my Digi/Avid 003 for my driver a lot, but I still would like a core audio. Whats good? Maybe one that has a 5.1 out? EricM
It looks good but I would replace that 9800gtx+ with a gts 250. Its the same thing but updated and just a smidge faster with much better cooling. Its also a bit shorter I believe, maybe an inch? Its still based off of the EXACT same chipset as the 9800gtx+. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...7-445-_-Product Msi's twinfrozr cooling is excellent. I would've bought this particular one but they were out of stock, so I got the PNY . As for soundcards, unfortunately I don't have much experience in this area. Try looking around this site and google for compatible Snow Leopard cards. And remember! LGA 1156 uses Dual channel ram, not triple. Triple channel is only used on 1366 boards, so you would want either 2x2GB or 4x2GB of ram. Buy em in pairs Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/211587-the-game-audio-hackintosh/#findComment-1418091 Share on other sites
