noNix
I am just about to purchase the parts for a new duel boot machine that I will be using for 3D CAD modeling and rendering. Components so far are: Core i7 860 Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 ECS GeForce GTX 275 - I need all those cores for rendering with Octane GPU based renderer. Enermax Modu82+ 625W Intel X-25-M 160 SSD Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB Generic SATA optical My main question is about RAM. The board supports DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 I am going to be installing 8GB, and the 2200 speed ram is crazy expensive ($380 + tax). Should I stick to 1333 CAS 7 or is there anything to be gained by moving to 1600 and going with a higher CAS. I do intend to over clock, but I am not looking for insane numbers as stability is a major factor, as is having a relatively cool and quiet machine. noNix
Found this article on AnandTech which answered all my questions. If the choice is DDR3 1333 CAS 7 or DDR3 1600 CAS 9 they will be almost identical in speed. The MHz increase being offset by the CAS latency. Moving to DDR3 1600 CAS 7 will give a very minor speed boost.
