banini_jeque
This is just a concept and not something I personally plan to do since I already have 2 hackintoshes, but for anyone who wants to build one in a MDD G4 case, try a Dell XPS 430 motherboard. It has the X48 chipset and is a BTX layout which should fit in the case just about perfectly without having to cut up the back. I would suggest dumping the optical drives in favor of a slot loading one mounted vertically on the side opposite the door. Then cutout the area around the front panel to make it slightly larger (so it can fit a CD vertically), and make a new stainless steel plate with a slot for the optical drive to fill in the area. for the power supply, gut the original mdd one and cram the innards of a PC supply inside of it. If you get one of the kind with the 120mm fan, it should fit. I hope someone does this so I can see it! - Banini Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/211079-mdd-g4-case-idea/ Share on other sites

banini_jeque
Where? All the mods I've seen use ATX motherboards and standards pc psus. booger_sniffer5000
I don't understand what makes it different if you still have to modify the drives. pirloui
The MDD has PCI ports on the opposite side, hence the need for BTX. Also, the CPU is precisely where the optical drives are, hence second problem. It hasn't been done plenty of times.. banini_jeque
Yeah, you're gonna have a problem with the optical drives most of the time whether you do BTX or ATX. Even in a G3 or pre MDD G4 case you have somewhat of an issue no matter how narrow your micro ATX board is. I figure the best way to mod a G3/G4 case is one that allows you do use a motherboard of any size, which means going to a slot load slim optical drive, and if you mount it vertically it gives you all the room in the world. I've been toying with the idea of cutting some sheets of acrylic and shaping them over a form to make new front, top and real panels, but I don't know if it's worth it. My favorite case right now is the digital audio G4, because it gives you 5 slot openings in the rear, and then in front it gives you a the same big opening as the G3 and sawtooth case that could be easy to cut out cleanly and used as a grill for improved airflow. Another concept I have planned is putting a DFI P55-T36 with an i7 in a G4 Cube case, complete with a decent graphics card that will fit. I think a GT 240 or a short GTS 250 should fit.
