I am planning on getting a dell mini 10v and hackintoshing it, but i was wondering if it was possible to put the glowing apple logo on the lid of the dell. I know that apple uses the backlight of the screen to light theirs i was just curious if it could be done and if there are instructions out there i think it would be an awsome mod thnks for your help

the glowing apple is a cutout of the plastic, aluminum or titanium shell (depending on model).

you'd have to dremel that out of the casing, which would be difficult, i would say it might be worth getting it laser or water cut for best results, but may not work for all materials, such as plastic.

that and you'd have to fill the newly created void with something. my powerbook's got simply a plastic insert, but the depth and size might not match a different laptop (i'm not sure if the apple on my powerbook is the same as the apple on my girlfriends dad's 2009MBP, in terms of exact size).

that and the back of most "PC" laptop screens are covered with a thin sheet of metal, as the casing is normally plastic...the apple is actually lit up by the light from the LCD screen. it's not it's own light, that's quite simply too complicated (and for most laptops, it wouldn't fit).

however, if you were to be crazy enough to do it, buy a used part off ebay and try it on that so you don't destroy the only parts you have. use surface mount 5v white LEDs, and try to use the thinnest material possible to mount them on, it wont be able to damage your LCD from behind (that i know of) but you need room for it to fit. to fill in the gap, you're on your own...maybe you'd be able to create a mold for it, or even find the part online somewhere. purely guessing.

use 5v LEDs, and wire them onto a USB header for the best results, but this will be a drain on your battery...i'd suggest looking at how it's made and seeing if you can use the LCD screen as your light source, that will make it least complicated. but do use a spare shell to cut, and probably get the apple before you cut anything (so you know how big you need it, not how big you want it...simply to avoid having something too small or too big).

in the process you could even put a lighting gel back there to change the color for your hackmac, my powerbook got a blue makeover, sleep LED and back apple.

Thank you for your input bonestonne I was planning on dremoling out a part of thr lcd housing which is metal then cutting out the apple logo out of the top of the dell but i dont know what type of material i should put to separate the two so you wont be able to hurt the lcd screen from the top i have seen this mod on a couple you tube videos but I cant find a tut. I am also planning on repainting the majority of the housing and decaling HacBook mini on it I think that and the glowing apple logo would make it look really awesome thanks and any more information is helpful

on all the macs i've seen, there actually is no protective layer underneath that area...it's not even really an impact area or anything, so i would say you don't have to worry about it much. but if you really want something there, try and find some thin lexan that you could place between the LCD and the casing. lexan is extremely strong, i could not begin to describe it. a common use is the covers on the outside of many attic windows outside houses. the covers don't look like much, but unless tampered with, if you go to hit it with a sledgehammer, the hammer will bounce back at you.

more importantly, once you cut it out, what are you filling that space with, or is it just an indent? it will be an entry point for who knows what...so i'd suggest maybe getting a panel and simply popping the apple off and using that for your stencil and filler. from the stem to base, my powerbooks apple is just under 2 inches, if i had to get any closer, maybe 1 7/8"? 15/16" at the most. but i don't really have anything precise out to measure it. My powerbook is the A1095 model (with the guts of an A1106).

I don't think it's a very advanced mod, it's just keeping it neat is the challenge. If i had to give any suggestions, maybe cut the apple just a little smaller, and file it out to the exact size, that way you'll be able to smooth the edges without making it too large.

If only I could buy an LCD lid that hasn't been cut with the apple yet! i would love to do this but with the skullcandy logo...

lexan i will look into that and i was planning on sanding it down after the only thing i am hoping i don't have to do is paint the shell but i probably will have to oh well. I hope it will look cool and i am debating on buying an old windows 95 laptop off of ebay and trying it on that first it would be smart oh well i will get to work on this then
