Hi.

I'm ready to build myself a new system since I've had this Pentium D system for about 5 years. It's a miracle (and thanks to the hard work of the osx86 community) that I've been able to run OS X on this box

Anyway, here's the spec for what I am planning to buy. If anyone sees any potential woes with OSX86 going forward or suggestions for substitutions that will increase compatibility (or even bang for the buck) please let me know!

Motherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD4P (onboard audio Realtek ALC889, onboard LAN Realtek 8111D)

CPU: Intel Core i7 860 Quad Core

Graphics Card: Palit GeForce GTX 260 Sonic

Memory: Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1600C9 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 9-9-9-24

Power Supply: Corsair TX850W 850W CMPSU-850TX

Heatsink: Thermaltake SpinQ Heatpipe CPU Cooler Heatsink

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1500GB 1.5TB SATA2 7200RPM

Optical Drive: LG GH22LP20 Black 22X IDE Lightscribe DVDRW

Keyboard: Razer Lycosa Gaming Ultrapolling Keyboard

Mouse: Logitech MX 1100 Cordless Laser Mouse

Case: Thermaltake Element V Full Tower ATX Case

You NEED, NEED, NEED to get a SATA dvd drive, not IDE. I don't know too much about your mobo but I think the p55a boards should work. Other than the drive, your golden.

Thanks for pointing that out! I didn't even realize I had managed to select an IDE optical drive ;)

A friend recommended I get 3 500Gb drives rather than a 1.5Tb and use software raid.

you have triple channel DDR3 RAM kit selected with a motherboard & CPU that require a dual channel DDR3 kit :(

there is no way you need an 850w PSU with that build

your CPU has a TDP (max draw) of 95w @ stock clocks, your video card pulls under 200w at extreme load & assorted other components use 50-75w or so

realistically you'd be just fine with a quality 80+ certified PSU at a lil over half the wattage (450-600w) & price. NCIX has 4 right now between 400w & 700w and $45-60 after rebate

that case seems absurdly expensive, but just a budget & taste thing

same with the CPU cooler, it looks badass but I'd expect a more conventional heatpipe cooler would be cheaper & better performing (check the hyper 212 plus)

I'm also partial to Apple keyboards, but only because I like having the OSX-friendly modifier keys & layout :P

Otherwise looks like a great build, the mobo is nice and compatible, and the video card appears so too

Thanks for the fantastic advice! I've changed the plan to the following

Same motherboard, cpu and video card

Memory: 2 x G.SKILL F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH Ripjaws PC3-10666 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1333 CL7-7-7-21 Core i5 1.65V Memory Kit

Power Supply: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W ATX 20/24PIN

Heatsink: Genius G950 Multi Socket Desktop CPU Cooler 4 Aluminum HeatPipes

Hard Drives: 3 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA2

Optical Drive: LG GH24LS50 24X Super Multi SATA DVD Writer

Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse 2 Keyboard Silver Black 104 Key W/ Purple Red Blue Key Illumination

Mouse: Apple Magic Mouse

Case: NZXT M59 ATX Mid Tower Case Black

Costs less than my previous plan and I get more memory and storage :)

Nice Setup so far.

I'd recommend you to test the Magic Mouse before you get it, some people didn't like the behaviour of the "Buttons". Another very nice keyboard is the "Logitech - Illuminated USB Keyboard" although there isn't a real driver for the Mac version of the Logitech Control Center out yet, it mostly works.

As for graphics I have a feeling the gtx260 might be a bit smallish for a core i7 but I haven't seen many benchmarks/tests lately.
