In regards to backup, of course there is Apple's Time Machine. This will work to restore your entire hard drive (excluding Windows) using the install disk or just individual files like kexts and whatnot. If you actually get a new hard drive, you'll have to redo the bootloader stuff, which can be annoying. If that's the case then google it. You could also make a clone using SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner (google them). Again, if you get a new hard drive, you'll have to jump through hoops to make Mac OS X boot again.

In regards to updates, you can do everything but Security Updates and Mac OS X Combo Updates without preparation. With the updates to the operating system, you MUST do a backup first. Especially back up your Extensions directory and your kernel. Combo updates often nuke certain things you've installed to make everything work nice. After the update you'll probably have to update things like disabler.kext and seatbelt.kext. You also might have to take out an AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement kext if it causes problems afterwards.
