I have have a Dell Dimension 8300 2.6GHz HT 512MB It's been a great system for the past couple of years considering it runs runs 24/7 The thing is it's a great system to run XP but for OSX it lacks a SSE3 CPU and a compatible video card, it also does not have enough RAM. This Dell runs as my BitTorrent downloader and file server, it also plays my Hi Def videos when hooked up to my projector.

I want to upgrade it, I can get a CPU in the socket 478 format that supports SSE3 and I can get a video card that is compatible but I'm still left with old technology. When I do a upgrade on my systems I like to move forward not stay back. The cost to replace the CPU and video card would cost me as much as a new motherboard with GMA950 on board and a socket 775 CPU. I know if I replace the motherboard I need to also replace the Dell proprietary power supply but what I don't know is if the case is a standard ATX case. I did some googling and all I can find is people talking about the power supply not the case. I know I'm almost at a hole new computer why not just buy a new case, well strangely enough I love my Dell case. It's nice and quiet and I like the clam shell style and also the rail system. I just find that if you don't spend two to three hundred on a case it's nothing more then a tin shell that does nothing in stopping the noise.

So has anyone here upgraded the motherboard in a Dell case and if so what problems did you find?
