Yes, you do need it. AFAIK, no OSx86 boot loader can load a Linux kernel directly; you need a Linux boot loader (GRUB, GRUB2, LILO, or a few other more exotic ones) to do that job. The two boot loaders can conflict, but the easiest way to avoid that is usually to install GRUB in the Linux partition's boot sector rather than on the MBR, and put the OSx86 boot loader (Chameleon, in your case) in the MBR (and other parts of it elsewhere, but the installer will probably handle the details).
