Vostro15
Hi, I am looking to build my next PC inside a PowerMac G3 (B&W) case. Obviously, due to the motherboard used by the original computer there are problems with the mb shape and size. I would like to fit a Gigabyte GA-G41M-E2SL, Quad-Core Intel CPU (not sure which yet), 4GB ddr2, Nvidia 9600gt, DVD Drive, 2 250gb Hard drives (2.5" SATA) and a decent PSU. That is the long term plan, for the moment I would like to use my old graphics card until I can find the money for a 9600gt, I currently have a 6800 (Ultra I think, it came with a Dell Dimension Desktop). Does anyone have any experience with a configuration like this? The only problems that I have heard about with this case is that the RAM often hits the DVD Drive so I plan to buy a slot-loading laptop drive, maybe even a MacBook Pro Superdrive or use the one from my Dell Vostro 1510 which I know works fine with OS X. Any comments of suggestions would be appreciated, Many thanks, Vostro15 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/204959-powermac-g3-hackintosh/ Share on other sites
Mighty Rearranger
Hey man! I'm currently working on a very similar project but with a G4. Obviously, you'll need some serious drilling in order to fit the microATX mobo into it. I'm pretty sure you'll need to cut some of the back, to fit the mobo's ports. If you're planning to keep the power supply from the G3, you may need some kind of extensor since the original one is just long enough to reach the original mobo. The DVD drive is a real pain... i really wanted to use it... but i suppose a slot loading one is OK. I don't know how to mod the cover to let CDs in (in case of the slot loading one) or if a tray loading laptop drive can push it enough. With a CPU like that, the stock cooling certainly won't do, so i'd suggest you to add some extra cooling if possible. Another problem is the power button... I don't know if it requires modding to fit into the new motherboard. The speaker didn't work for me since there is no way of connecting it to my mobo.... The components you are using are kinda expensive were i live, so i use a cheaper configuration. I'm using an ASUS P5KPL-AM, a Core Duo, 4 gig RAM... i'm short on money so the hard drive and video card are missing. If u get it, tell me how does the 9600 gt behave! It'd be AWESOME to play on a machine like that!!
