So my Macbook Pro is getting a bit dated and I'm looking at venturing into the Hackintosh realm. My research tends to suggest the most compatible motherboard at the moment is the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5. With this in mind, I pieced together a hackintosh build and would like some feedback on how well this build fits my needs.

The background:

My main activity (apart from web browsing) is photographic processing work, predominantly through iPhoto and Photoshop; including process intensive work such as panoramic stitches, focus stacking and HDRs. The main requirement for the build (apart from its performance for graphics work) is that it must be compatible with a 30" LCD (2560 x 1920) via DVI connection. Gaming is not an issue as I will rarely if ever use this as a gaming machine.

The build:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5

Processor: 2.66GHz Intel Quad-Core i7 920

Graphics: MSI NVIDIA GeForce GT 9800 1GB3

Memory: 6GB Kit DDR3 2000 G.Skill-Trident

I am yet to decide on the optical drive, but anything that's compatible that burns DVDs is fine. I am interested in having a RAID 5 setup; is this possible with a Hackintosh build... are there any RAID cards supported, or am I biting off more than I can chew here? HDD, case, & power supply choices will presumably depend on whether I go with a RAID configuration or not...

Thoughts on the build? I based it on the assumption that faster processor & RAM will speed up my processing times... I am unsure of the impact of the graphics card and whether photoshop utilises the onboard GPU RAM or not.

Cheers

here is a thread with dsdt mods for it

Dunno anything about the board but trying to get an idea of what to upgrade to too. Im curious how much of that board is 1:1 with mac?

Did you follow a specific set of docs/guide or a combination of them? Were there any many issues that you came across or was it pretty smooth ? Is there a Geekbench result you can post ?

Thank you.

Just got my UD5 running 100%, will make an extensive review of it by next week.

Been using a Mac Pro for 3 years so it will be interesting to read if you need a comparison with a real mac.

I made a combination, using a patched DSDT and 0 gpu enablers =)

for nvidia it will be different though, my review/guide will be for ati cards

hyperthreading is on, its nice to see 8 cores in taskbar with istat menus =)

I said 100% but that is false, 64 bit does not work, or well, it works but in 64 bit if I sleep and wake, I get KP on restart/shutdown. anyway 64bit does not give performance so whaterver =)

gonna overclock tomorrow.
