Hello everyone,

I have been hanging around the forums with 400 tabs on firefox to get osx86 or snow leopard to work on my G1S.

I prefer to have the latest snow leopard running.

I decided to post because i have really reach a road block.

My G1S specs are as follow:

T7700 Core 2 Duo 2.40GHz

Bios version 300/ un mod (i would prefer not to mod unless its super necessary)

nVidia 8600m GT 245mb

intel wireless 4965

I have tried many guides,

This guide http://kalyway-10-5-1-asusg1s.wikidot.com/kalyway seems that with a 10.5.1 installion you do not need to mod my bios.

Question 1: i do not know what settings need to be set in my bios, as ACHI and ACPI settings are not available on my bios settings.

Next i have tried many distros, kalyway 10.5.1, kalyway 10.5.2, Snow Leopard Universal, iATkos v7, all which are burn on DVD+RW at 2x speed.

Non of these will get detected my laptop, i tried the iATkos v7 and kalyway 10.5.2 on my desktop and it detected it, but due to hardware i am not able to install it on my desktop.

Question 2: What do i need to get these disc booted?

I have windows 7 installed and current have an extra partition of 20Gb to install OS X.

I have tried, http://lifehacker.com/5360150/install-snow...acking-required, guide, i used my friends mac to prepare a IDE harddisk and restore the .dmg snow leopard retail on it and install EP45UD3P Snow Leopard install package for the IDE harkdisk.

I am able to boot this into darwin boot loader, however any bootstrap that i use will lead me to kernal panic.

Question 3: Do i need to have any pre-installed mac before using the EP45UD3P Snow Leopard install package with retail snow leopard?

Please anyone, you do not need to spoonfeed me, i would just like to be point into a direction which will be able to further my progress in install OS X on my G1S laptop.

I Intend to dual boot windows 7 and OS X.

Thank You

Sincerely

Samuel

I hope someone will reply soon:)

Question 1: No BIOS setting changes should be necessary. However, I'd REALLY recommend using the modified BIOS 300 because without it you won't get both cores working and you'll always have to boot with the cpus=1 argument to get it working.

Question 2: If the laptop isn't detecting the DVD for all those distros, either it isn't burnt properly or it's just not set to read CDs before booting off the hard disk. If the second reason is the case, then just press ESC while the laptop is starting (i.e. at the Asus Fire Explosion bios boot screen) and select the DVD rom drive. Otherwise, you might need to find a different burner/program and make sure it burns it as a bootable disc.

Question 3: If you want to install Snow Leopard on your G1S, you probably DON'T want an EP45UD3P install package with the retail image, since those are files for installing ON YOUR DESKTOP. You would need files FOR the G1S, but probably mostly just a proper DSDT file would suffice.

I've never had any problems installing any of the Leopard distros (Kalyway 10.5.2, iDeneb 10.5.6, etc) on my G1S, and at the moment I have a retail install of 10.5.7 on it. Of course, this was AFTER flashing BIOS 300 to support both cores. Don't worry, it works and doesn't hurt anything on the windows side, etc unless you flash it wrong obviously. It really is kind of necessary.

Also, I haven't really had a chance to try installing or tinkering with Snow Leopard, but I want to try soon. So if you haven't figured it out by then, maybe I can help. Tell me what happens.

Hey there spinner:)

Thanks for helping me out:)

Yup i will decided to mod my bios soon, are there any recovery methods incase it fails. And will it fail at all?

Yup i found out that its because i have been using DVD+RW, once i switch over to DVD-RW it detected the DVD, i have kalyway 10.5.1 currently installed.

Files for G1S you mean the kext that needs to be on snow leopard? Do i just need a G1S DSDT file? A DSDT file can be created using the patcher right?

Yes samer here i will try to get snow leopard running too:)

May i know what kext you used for the hardwares?

And how do i go about installing them?

I used the http://kalyway-10-5-1-asusg1s.wikidot.com/kalyway guide as it looks like it was sure to work. :D

Hope to hear from you soon:)

Hey xisamix,

Have you had any progress? Just dropped by to give a status update on where I'm at. After about 4 days of fiddling around with kexts, etc, I'm proud to report that I have a nearly flawless Snow Leopard running on my G1S. So it's definitely possible, and actually not too hard if you know what you're doing.

I don't really have time to write up a detailed guide to help you, and I must admit i've done this a lot before so I knew how to troubleshoot things when they went wrong, but I hope I can help a little bit. So here's the general idea of what you need to do:

First off, I really suggest using the USB stick / external hard drive method of installing off a snow leopard image, because I never had much luck with boot132 CDs. Though i'm sure it's possible if you really have to go that route and boot off a DVD.

Second off, you need to realize one major setback to OSX: The 4965 won't work on it, at least not for a while if Project Camphor works out. This means no wireless. Plugging in a corded connection works out of the box, though. So hopefully you have a corded connection handy. You can always replace the wifi card inside the laptop though, which is what i'm going to do.

Anyway, I used an 8 GB USB stick, which requires an already existing OSX installation. If you've managed to install some kind of distro like Kalyway, or anything, that's great, because all you need is Disk Utility really. You're gonna end up wiping it out anyway, unless you really want a Leopard / Snow Leopard dual boot for some reason. If you can do this, great. Here's how it works:

1. Download Chameleon RC3 or RC4 and install to USB stick. Also, put the Chameleon installer onto the stick as well for later.

2. Restore Snow Leopard DVD to the USB stick using Disk Utility. UNCHECK erase destination.

3. I used this guide to find the right kexts to place into the /Extra/Extensions folder of the USB stick.

4. This is IMPORTANT; make sure you put the DSDT.aml file i've attached into the /Extra folder as well. It should work for your G1S, and it's basically what makes this install work so well.

5. Boot from USB stick, select the USB partition in Chameleon, and install Snow Leopard. If you want to use the same partition as your distro, don't just install over it, make sure you erase the partition first for a clean install.

6. You will need to use the USB stick to boot your real Snow Leopard partition for the first time.

7. Now, hopefully, SL should boot up. You're not done yet.

8. Install Chameleon to the hard drive using the installer from the USB stick. If you chose to use RC4, you're going to need to boot with the flag "Wake=n" (or add it to com.apple.boot.plist), or else Chameleon will just freeze when it tries to load the hibernation file. This might not be the case for you, but it was for me. So if it freezes on the Chameleon menu after choosing OSX, you know what to do. Hopefully this will be fixed.

9. You'll notice you don't have touchpad/keyboard on the laptop. I hope you have a USB mouse and keyboard you can plug in, cause you'll need that for now.

10. Copy the DSDT file and all the Extensions over from the USB stick over to /Extra on your hard drive. Make sure you set permissions and create a kextcache. Look at the guide above for a neat little Mkext tool.

11. You'll need some extra kexts to get some things working. You're going to need:

-VoodooHDA.kext for sound.

-VoodooBattery.kext for the battery meter.

-VoodooPS2Controller.kext bundled with AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext for laptop touchpad/keyboard.

Make sure these kexts are for 64 bit, unless you're planning on using 32 bit Snow Leopard for some reason. Look on the Voodoo Labs forum for 64 bit versions of VoodooHDA and VoodooPS2Controller. VoodooBattery can be found at superhai.com. These kexts need to go in System/Library/Extensions; they didn't work in /Extra/Extensions for me. Also make sure to remove AppleHDA.kext, as it may conflict with VoodooHDA. Use kexthelper or set the permissions etc yourself for these.

Also, the only kexts I use in /Extra/Extensions are fakesmc, IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector, OpenHaltRestart and PlatformUUID. Of these, the only one I know is necessary is fakesmc and maybe the IOAHCI one, and I haven't bothered seeing what I do/don't need. Use OpenHaltRestart only if shutdown/restart doesn't work. The DSDT file takes care of anything else, so you don't need any kind of disabler/nullcpupowermanagement kext or any kind of nvidia injector or efi string. Nifty, right?

If you do all of that, you should have a Snow Leopard that works really nicely. There are some things that don't work, like the webcam, and maybe the mic (haven't tried), but I don't really use these things, so it didn't matter to me. Also, the silver buttons at the top (besides power) and the ASUS OLED screen don't work. The LED screen just shows ASUS all the time, and doesn't turn off when you sleep. Unfortunate, but i'm not complaining. And wireless still doesn't work.

So, that took a really long time to type up (and I totally contradicted my second sentence stating I didn't have time to write this up), but I hope i'm not too confusing in my explanation. If you get stuck on a part or don't understand something, please do tell so I can assist further. A lot of what I just said can be found in a billion other places on this forum, so remember to search for something if you're lost. Good luck!

Hey there Spinner2727,

Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year:)

I have tried certain parts and met with some errors, i have not fully explored it so i will continue trying first:)

Just 1 question,

3. I used this guide to find the right kexts to place into the /Extra/Extensions folder of the USB stick.

4. This is IMPORTANT; make sure you put the DSDT.aml file i've attached into the /Extra folder as well. It should work for your G1S, and it's basically what makes this install work so well.

At step 3 do you mean by add the

com.apple.Boot.plist

smbios.plist

extensions folders with mininum kext.

?

And i am not sure how do i go about creating a smbios unique to my system.

By the way, are you using a mod bios?

I have not mod my bios.

I was very wandering if it is safe and can i recover from a bad flash?

You mention you are changing the wifi card.

Is you warrantly over?

Thank You So Much:)

Sincerely

Samuel

Hey Sam,

For step 3, I didn't follow the guide completely. You don't really need SMBios.plist to get it installed, and I didn't bother with it. I also didn't really bother with com.apple.Boot.plist. I had one from before, but it was basically empty, so try it without first. Boot.plist really only just automatically specifies boot parameters for you without you having to type it in, so it's not really essential to have one in Chameleon if you don't need it. For the kexts, use the four kexts that I mentioned in the third-to-last paragraph. And make sure you copy the DSDT file that I attached in my previous post too. Also, follow the guide I linked to in step 3 to modify the PlatformUUID.kext to suit your system. I don't really know if you need that kext, but I did it just to make sure.

And yes, I was using a modded BIOS this entire time. This one is the one you want, and it works very nicely thanks to Kabyl. Just put it on a USB stick and use the EZ Flash utility inside the BIOS. The only way I can see it failing is if you ran out of battery in the middle of flashing and didn't have it plugged in or something...so don't do that. Otherwise you should be fine. Of course i'm not guaranteeing anything, so I won't take responsibility if anything bad happens.

My warranty is over, but either way switching out the Wifi card won't void the warranty, I think. The only thing that voids the warranty is breaking/removing the sticker on the CPU, and that's in a completely different place. I don't have the card yet though, so I haven't tried taking out the old one yet.

Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!
