jrv3034
Hello, all! This is my first post here. I'm attempting to build a Snow Leopard Mac using the guide found on Lifehacker here: http://lifehacker.com/5360150/install-snow...acking-required I have a question. The guide says I need an existing OSX machine to prepare the thumbdrive with the disk image and other files. Can this "existing OSX machine" be a PowerMac G5? Or do I need an Intel Mac to prepare the thumbdrive? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to becoming a regular in the InsanelyMac forums. Thanks in advance! jrv3034
The G5 will be fine, you may also like to look at this method http://osx86.sojugarden.com/installer/ Excellent! Thanks, and I'll definitely take a look at the method you posted. gismose7en
I'd just add another option how to prepare a bootable USB flash drive... This method worked for me. Basically it's a workaround for those who don't have an access to a Mac My point is: No you don't need a Mac at all to prepare a bootable USB stick, BUT you have to have three 3 things ready: 1) VT hardware support (virtualisation technology enabled) - check your BIOS settings 2) VMWare Workstation 7 installed 3) google for Snow Leopard VMWare Workstation 7 and VMWare Player 3 I don't want to spam or anything, that's why I left step 3 unspecified, but no worries, u will find it. Oh yeah, I've used latest installer of MyHack by Conti, very nice tool Unfortunately, SL didn't work on my lappy as I could have imagined (hardware incompatibility u know ) but that's another story... Good luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/201871-do-i-need-an-intel-mac-for-thumbdrive-prep/#findComment-1356805 Share on other sites
jrv3034
OK, I need help. I just got back from the Apple Store with a brand new copy of Snow Leopard. I put it into my PowerMac G5 to create the disk image, but the computer doesn't recognize the disc. At all. It makes a weird clicking noise for about 30 seconds, then ejects the DVD. Are you sure I can create the Snow Leopard image on a G5 computer? Or was I simply extremely unlucky and got a bad copy of the DVD? Or did my DVD drive just die? I try other discs, and they play fine, so I'm assuming the DVD drive works. Help please! jrv3034
EDIT Some single layer drives apparently won't read DL DVD's Well, My G5 (rev. A dual 2GHz G5 PowerMac) came with this disc drive: SONY DVD RW DW-U10A I'm sure it can't burn dual layer DVDs, but I don't know if it should be able to read them. I do have the new DL-DVD drive I got for the Hackintosh I'm building, but I'm not sure how to connect it to my existing PowerMac. Any ideas? jrv3034
It's all good. I borrowed my brother's PowerBook G4, and it reads it fine, so I'm creating the disk image there. Weird that the G4 can read it, but not the G5. Thanks for the help, though!
