bonestonne
If I have a 2004/early 2005 G5 Dual 1.8GHz, what are the fastest processors I can upgrade to? Can I upgrade to the dual core PPC processors and make it a quad? (assuming I buy a matched pair etc) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/201225-g5-dual-question/ Share on other sites
Moose Tracks
You can't upgrade the processor on the G5 towers like you could a G4. That being said, the G5's are very spiffy machines. bonestonne
G5 Dual 1.8GHz with 4.5GB of RAM is pretty slow right now with Photoshop CS4 + RAW file work. was looking to upgrade to at least 2.0ghz, but i guess it would be a whole new tower at that.. time to look for a deal. Moose Tracks
Can you downgrade to the previous version? That would probably solve the "universal apps suck on PPC" problems. MadSkillzMan
Can you downgrade to the previous version? That would probably solve the "universal apps suck on PPC" problems. Or grab an older copy of XSlimmer, which rips out all the un-used intel code. Trust me, it makes a world of difference. bonestonne
I'll look into XSlimmer, the fact is, it's not my Mac, it's my girlfriends dad. he keeps telling me about certain files that pop up in Disk Repairs and Permission checks, SUID files. Do those have to do with Intel coding? I was hoping I could drop in a pair of 2.5ghz PPC G5 processors to replace the 1.8's, but if I can't, then I'll take the software route.
