Keep on doing your good work! iDeneb 1.6 (10.5.8) installed fine and is running while I'm writing this post:) . But now I have a serious Problem: I would like to connect my iDeneb OSX to my Debian fileserver using SMB/CIFS protocol. When I go to Applications > Utilities > Directory Utility > Services there is are only options for "Active Directory", "BSD Flat File and NIS", "LDAPv3", "Local" SMB / CIFS is missing! But its should look like this: Is this an issue due to the iDeneb lite release? or are these services not activated by default? maybe "wrong" kernel? I made attempts to mount smb shares manually with mount_smbfs in the shell and with the Finder: Go->Connect to Server and enter the SMB path in the format smb://username:password@servername/path/to/smb/share no succes! Lord_Jeremy Posted December 6, 2009 Share Posted December 6, 2009 Well I just opened up Directory Utility on my MacBook Pro and got the same list that you say you got. I don't think anything in particular is wrong, just you're misunderstanding some sort of function of this program. Now I've never connected to a SMB server before (I like to avoid Microsoft stuff) but I'm sure there's some way to do it in Mac OS X. Though the question begs, why the hell are you using SMB to connect to an Ubuntu server? Haven't you ever heard of SSH? strobo Posted December 9, 2009 Author Share Posted December 9, 2009 are you kidding? i think this is kind of misunderstanding. 1st of all, my fileserver runs clean, good old debian. of course I know and use SSH. Of course I know how how to use NFS among Unix machines. And yes, there is always the possibilty to mount SMB/CIFS or NFS shares manually in the shell. But that is not my question. Why should I mount SMB/ NFS shares manually when there is the nice integration in OSX's finder? So I am asking again: At my iDeneb 1.6 lite (OSX 10.5.8) it seems, that these services are not running out of the box, espacially connecting to a SAMBA share via finder doesn't work. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe my OSX doesn't like some SAMBA server settings. Or its possible, that the SMB and NFS services do not appear any longer in the Directory Utility. However, from linux and windoze machines in my LAN this has never been a problem. Yeah they just don't appear in the Directory Utility on my MacBook Pro. I seem to remember from my days on the Apple Discussion forums that Leopard doesn't like certain configurations of SAMBA. However in those cases I think the Finder would give a dialog box with an error code. What kind of failure occurs when you try to use Finder?
