Bmacwards
Hey all, I have after a couple of days of fiddling got my oldish Dell D820 CoreDuo 2ghz, Intel GMA 950 0x27a2 graphics running Snow Leopard! Seeing how helpful these and all the other forums have been, and how it was hard to find specific info for this machine, thought I would post up a zip with all the Kexts / installer packages that will be the perfect base for anyone wanting to attempt this. This guide provided all the basic info: http://www.infinitemac.com/f57/how-to-inst...-on-a-pc-t3137/ I used a running VMWare workstation copy of Leopard on my Win7 PC with my laptop HDD attached and hooked in through VMWare (add Hard Disk > Use a physical disk) to run the Snow Leopard install DVD OSInstall.mpkg and install on to my laptop drive. Then plugged the HDD back in to my D820 - Dell made that one easy. The kext's I have ended up using are in the attached zip. You also need to run the (Installer packages)\VoodooPS2Controller-0.98-installer.pkg to get keyboard and trackpad (horrible - attach a mouse!) working. Install the Chameleon 2 RC3 package - this will handle booting into SL when you start your machine, you can also type boot flags at this point to change how the machine boots. Useful options are -v (verbose mode, will show everything going on, including where it hangs / kernel panics), -f (ignores any kext cache that is present, and rebuilds it I believe - use this after adding / removing and kexts), cpus=1 (turns off the second core of your processor, alleviates cpu not responding to interrupts problems), -x (safe mode startup). I am still only able to use the cpus=1 flag when at Chameleon - this will get you in to SL. Once in, use OSX86Tools (http://code.google.com/p/osx86tools/downloads/list) to obtain an EFI string for your GMA950, then use the OSX86Tools to add this to your Boot.plist file - seems to help. I am having a REALLY weird problem with the graphics. During boot once it gets to the point where the GUI starts to display, my laptop screen goes blank. I plug in an external LCD and everything is good. Now after adding the EFI string (I think - not sure if it would do this before), if I then use Fn + F8 (CRT/LCD), I get corrupt vision on my external, again, corrupt vision on laptop, again, back on external and then unplug it - the laptop screen fires up with healthy graphics. If anyone has any ideas on this it would be great. Get yourself a Mac compatible Wireless adapter as well because I don't think there is much hope for the Broadcom network port and I am still looking around for an Intel Pro wireless driver. I am using a Dlink DWA-140 with the 10.5 Leopard driver / utility from their site and it works a treat. Thanks to all the hard working people out there who have put in the time to help us all get this thing running! user411
Hi there, Thanks for the information! Everything I've read about this suggested it's impossible, so this is great news. I have a Dell D820 as well and plan on checking this out tomorrow. Would you be willing to share your patched DSDT file? I have a NVidia graphics board, so it won't be exactly the same, but it might be helpful. Do any of your external sound ports work with your kexts/DSDT? I am running 10.5 right now and the external mic doesn't work (I think headphones do...). If I can get mine booting too, I will post some feedback. Regards! VFXRAVEN19
Any new developments on this? I got my D820 (Core 2 T7200, 4GB RAM, 120GB WD Scorpio, Nvidia NVS 110M) and attempted to install SL. Are there any precise guides? I cannot get the keyboard/trackpad working at all (even with VoodooPS2 fix), have to plug in a MAC keyboard and mouse. Don't know what I am missing. VoodooHDA looks like it loads, but there's no option to output to the D820 speakers. Don't think VoodooBattery is working, I don't see the battery icon or options. Is there a working BCM57xx kext for SL? Are there specific BIOS settings needed? I install SL using my SL desktop (Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P Intel Quad) using the first general guide mentioned, but I am lost thereafter. Any help with the D820 would be appreciated... Noodle09
My D820 running Snow Leopard 10.6.3. Everything work fine except video card, and yes, I have Intel GMA950 video card. Installed from retail snow leopard, but using USB flash. Remember you need to pass "cpus=1" when you boot it, and after installation done, install VoodooTSCSync.kext for snow leopard into your /E/E to enable two cores. If you got Intel wifi card, forget about it, and buy a Broadcom based wifi card on ebay (Dell true 1459 or something like that). Till now, there's no good driver for Intel wifi card. Somebody working on it (VoodooWifi I think), but still only 3xxx card and still beta. Too many headache. Broadcom chip based wifi will give you a work out of box. My D820 come with Broadcom chip based NIC, and that's a work out of box too. In order to get audio (STAC 9200) fully work, you really need to work hard on it. It fully work for me. Internal speaker, headphone, internal mic, external mic, even after wake up. So it should work for you too. First: google DSDT hacker, you will need it, I mean really need it. Second: read this http://www.projectosx.com/forum/index.php?...ic=465&st=0, make sure you really understand how to make PinConfig. And use DSDT hacker to make sure you see all connectors in your system profiler. Last: make sure you get latest VoodooHDA and VoodooHDA prefPanel. do not download from google code, or voodoo forum. they are out of date. Latest version is 0.2.6, looking for it on projectosx forum. Problem still remaining: 1. Wifi indicator led never on. I didn't bother to try to fix it yet. 2. Video cause sleep/wakeup issue (I will cover it later) 3. Video still not perfect, for example: Aperture 3.x cannot run, or if make it run, sleep/wakeup never work 4. external DVI not working My /E/E packages: NullCPUPowerManagement.kext OpenHaltRestart.kext PlatformUUID.kext SleepEnabler.kext VoodooBattery.kext VoodooPower.kext VoodooSDHC.kext VoodooTSCSync.kext fakesmc.kext (I'm not using VoodooPS2, but patched PS2Controller, many people report that VoodooPS2 works) And under /S/L/E, I removed AppleHDA.kext (You had to if you want to use VoodooHDA) and put VoodooHDA.kext(0.2.6) under it. Of cause you can install VoodooHDA.kext into /E/E as well, but remember to copy all dependents from /S/L/E to /E/E as well. Issues: Video. I'm running 10.6.3, it may different from 10.6.2 or previous. The thing I tried and what work what not: 1. All 10.6.3 stock kexts (AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext, AppleIntelGMA950xxxx.kexts, most of them version number is: 1.6.10), Sometimes garble screen, some horizontal lines, and clear mouse cursor. sometimes works fine with external monitor (VGA) pluged in. 2. All 10.6.3 stock kexts except AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext. Using AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext version 1.4.18. Works in most cases, cannot wake up from sleep. fatwallet forum view topic page cannot display correctly. 3. All 10.6.2 stock kexts (most 1.6.6 version). Works in most cases, even wake up in some cases. But Aperture 3.0x will not start, pixel format invalid issue. Sleep/Wakeup. With 1.6.6 GMA 950 driver, I was able to sleep and wakeup only if laptop was boot up on dock station. After that even removed from dock station, sleep and wakeup still fine. If I boot the laptop without dock station, wakeup will never work. Compare DSDT with and without dock station, no different. Bluetooth: bought a bluetooth adapter from ebay, OSX reorganize it. But if you are surfing mouse cursor jump/move to right top corner or left bottom corner issue, try to disable bluetooth from BIOS. Especially when it's still 10.5.8, it toke me few weeks to figure it out. Also, bluetooth could cause PS2 (built-in keyboard and mouse pad) stop working. I have attached my DSDT file, com.apple.Boot.plist (if you don't use DSDT hack for GMA950, you can use com.apple.Boot.plist.bak) and smbios.plist. BTW, I'm using Chameleon 2.0 RC4 boot loader D820.zip Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/200140-dell-d820-coreduo-intel-gma-950-0x27a2/#findComment-1453196 Share on other sites
geminiosiris
I just got Snow Leopard running on my d820 as well. Actually, everything worked right out of the box except it has an Intel wireless card. I just ordered a Dell(Broadcom) card to get it up and running. I'm surprised at how well everything is running on the machine. I simply used Chameleon to boot up to Snow Leopard and installed it just fine. I do have the Nvidia graphics and not the Intel. I am also using a docking station, but OS X works just fine with it undocked. I do have problems with Sleep and wake, but definately isn't a deal breaker. I simply have it docked next to my monitor and just boot it up to my monitor.
