monte79
Hello, looking for some install tips and making sure I understand everything I am reading about all this. System is a Dell Optiplex 960 -CPU: Core 2 Quad-Core q9400 -Mem: 4gb -Vid: ATI HD 3400 -Dis: Dual Dell 2208WFP(Digital) -MB: not sure yet(have to check on that) -OS: Win XP Pro 32bit -Net: Intel 5300 AGN(no access to wired LAN)(i know this won't work) 1-Cruzer micro 8GB USB 1-Fujitsu 100gb HD (eventual home for OSX) I want to use the USB cruzer as the installer, and install to the externally connected 100gb hd. Is this all possible? I have dmg2img that will allow me to get the image on the cruzer.(i think) What I don't get is what to i do with the external drive where OSX will be installed. Is there a way to prep that drive in XP? Using the USB cruzer as the install disc will I have to use the boot 123( i think thats what I was reading.)? Will this install be a full 64bit install? thanks for any information in advance. Great forum, just so much information its hard to decide what will actually work or what is the better way/s to do certain things. monte79
well after some additional reading, i believe that i will be unable to do this without a mac. if i read it correctly there is not a way to get the .dmg of the disc to the usb key. unsure on that at the moment. also, if I get this all ready to go will it be just a simple plug in the drive if I want to start OSX or will there have to be like a boot loader all the time no matter if the drive is hooked up or not? monte79
maybe I should just use a modified distro, instead of retail version? which one is better? pdave54
maybe I should just use a modified distro, instead of retail version? which one is better? There are no snow distro(s) There are guides on how to burn the dmg to a disk in windows, then say use a boot 123 method of booting it Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/200113-dell-optiplex-960-osx-106/#findComment-1347139 Share on other sites

I am unsure about the burning. I managed to use dmg2img to make a .img but when I open it using 7zip or mount it using Virtual cloneDrive the only stuff I see in there is boot camp and dvdcd sharing couple other files related to those folders. i can look at the .dmg in 7zip and see all kinds of stuff. is there a way i can maybe strip it down to make it fit on a single layer dvd? monte79
i found some strip down methods, all seem to point to having a OSX install already. Maybe I am just not meant to have this on this desktop. I think I'll just go back to linux.
