retack
945GC system here, originally had JaS installed but has gone through many updates since then. Each time an update is run, I back up the kernel and Extensions folder, and I have in the past restored them when an update has gone bad. Today I tried the 10.5.8 update (from 10.5.7), and got a restart error half way through. I assume this was the IntelCPUPowerManagement kext somehow getting past the delete script. Anyway the machine wouldn't boot up afterwards, always stopping with an unrelated firewire message. So, I booted off a dvd and moved the old kernel and Extensions folders back from the backup, changed permissions and everything and restarted. Still wouldn't boot. same stopping point. After becoming increasingly frustrated, I've gone as far as to copy EVERY folder back from a time machine backup from earlier in the day - /bin, /sbin, /usr, /System and the kernel, and STILL the machine won't boot. Even though all system files are the same as they were earlier in the day, when they worked fine. Is there ANYTHING else this update could have touched? Why won't my system boot up anymore?! I've been asking on IRC but nothing so far. The furthest I can get is by booting with stock kernel (usually using voodoo) and using -f, this gets me to a desktop (with incorrect background) but frozen mouse/keyboard. retack
Well this might be useful to someone - I fixed the problem by going through a driver install procedure (not the entire OS) with an iATKOS v7 DVD. I installed a new bootloader, voodoo kernel (9.7.0), DSDT, disabler, and a couple drivers and made sure to enable the post-install script/cleanup. The next boot worked perfectly!
