Hello all,

I am getting closer to doing my actual OS X SL installation. This will be my first hackintosh build. I've been scouring over these forums for the past few months and believe I have a solid installation plan defined with the exception of a few lingering questions.

I don't plan to use Digital Dreamer's installation script. Based on the threads that support his work it isn't for a lack of not thinking the script works well but rather for me to fully understand how all of the pieces fit together. I'd prefer to work through it quasi-manually. I've already created a bootable thumbdrive with the kexts for my (proposed) hardware and contains the SL installation DVD. I know it works well enough to boot a PC but then fails, as expected, because that test PC is not the one that the kexts are for.

What is the proper protocol to create the UUID for this build? I'd like to make sure I understand what and where this information is recorded so that if I need to rebuild my machine I can use the same UUID to keep my iTunes and MobileMe (and whatever else may depend on that unique information) consistent.

I would be grateful if you have information on the following:

How do I determine or create a unique UUID?

Which files and kexts does that UUID need to be edited into?

Any other things I need to know about the UUID?

Thanks.

Hey buddy, DD's script is sooo easy, dont even bother manual install. Snow Leopard made correct UUID more neccessary and DD just does all of this automatically. If you want, look at blackOSX's tutorials and he teaches you everything you need to know about getting setup on your UD5 in his PDF's (talks about UUID as well).

I used only the PlatformUUID.kext taking the UUID of my partition (open diskutil click on partition then Info button to get) which I copied into the Info.plist of the .kext, worked great.

Thanks for the info on that. I am looking at Blackosx's installation guides, as well. He also mentions editing the info.plist for PlatforumUUID.kext. He goes on further to say that he also added that same UUID into SMBIOS.plist.

I'll probably do that as well.

Thanks.

Your welcome. I don't think it necessary to do the second but it can't hurt and its only a few seconds time to do so why not. Also I see you have an 8800GT in the machine you will want to be installing the Disabler.kext with the AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext in its blacklist to prevent the mouse lag problem.
