Lenovo Ideapad U330 226765 Hackintosh

First post! I've been lurking here for the past week and I got my new Lenovo U330 working. This is the "energy saving graphics only" version, not the one that includes the ATi card. This means, its got the X4500. It's currently about $650 for a 13.3, 4 pounder laptop!

 

The specs can be found on the Lenovo site and also here but without the ATi card.

 

Let's get started:

1. Download the following:

- iDeneb v1.6 1058 Lite Edition and burn to a DVD-R

- Carbon Copy Cloner

- Kext Helper and the Fixed X4500 Kext driver

 

2. Start your U330 and hit F2 and go into your BIOS. Under Advanced, SATA Controller Mode, make sure "AHCI" is selected. Under Boot tab, hit F5/F6 to make DVD boot first. Exit Saving Changes.

 

3. Insert iDeneb v1.6 and boot. Once loaded, go to Utilities > Disk Utility

 

4. Format your HDD using the following:

30GB - iDeneb install

10GB - iDeneb restore (using Carbon Copy Cloner)

REST - Storage

 

I used GUID partition because I have no plans to dual boot with Windows 7 at the moment. If you want to dual boot in the future, set partition as MBR and add another 30GB partition for Windows 7 after the 10GB partition.

 

5. Once your done, Quit Disk Utility, pick the 30GB partition to install iDeneb. Make sure you hit the Customize button and use the following:

6. Once completed, fill out the initial registration stuff. Once into the Desktop, you'll notice that the resolution is set to 1024x768. Go install the X4500 Kext using Kext Helper. Reboot!

 

7. Go to System Preferences, hit Displays > Color > choose Adobe RGB to improve your LCDs colors!

 

8. Setup other preferences: wallpapers, dock, install Firefox, GMail notifier or whatever you like as long as you don't go over 10GB! To check, right click on your 30GB disk and Get Info.

 

9. Once your happy with your setup, install Carbon Copy Cloner, start it and clone it to the 10GB partition. If your 30GB partition craps out on your, you can boot into the 10GB partition and run CCC to restore a perfectly working OS.

 

What works and not:

1. Webcam allowed me to take a photo during registration but does not work in iChat.

 

2. Front Row give me a black full screen. Hit Esc to exit.

 

3. Photo Booth does not start due to X4500 does not have Quartz Extreme enabled.

 

4. SDcard mounts but if you remove the card before ejecting, it can crash the OS.

 

5. Auto sleep and manual sleep works! No need to install Sleep Helper Kext. (edited 11/9/09)

 

6. Serato ITCH works with my Vestax VCI-300. I mainly got this laptop for my DJing side job. This let's me run with 1ms latency as opposed to 5ms with Windows. This is the main reason for installing OSX! Since Wifi works, no need for a Windows 7.

 

Notable Applications:

1. Firefox with GrApple skins, Fission and Tab Mix Plus add-ons

2. AppCleaner, enable Smart Delete in preferences to delete system applications such as Mail or Safari

3. Google Notifier

4. uTorrent

5. Perian to enable DivX/Xvid playback into Quicktime
