Apple DVD not working

First off, excellent work on all of this! Thanks so much!

I got it all working properly, and had only one small issue: I have to go into my sound preferences every time I boot up and set it to "internal speaker," in order for sound to work. Anyone got a fix for that?

Then, out of nowhere, Apple DVD player started giving me an error code: "A valid video device could not be found for playback [-70017]"

I tried fixing my permissions (as some ppl had suggested on other forums), but that didn't work.

Any thoughts on how to fix? Or do I have to do a complete reinstall?

The DVD player was working for at least a week before this happened. The disk mounts on the desktop, and I can access it, so I know it's not my player, and I plugged in an external DVD drive just to make sure -- same thing happens, so I know it is a software issue.

Thanks!
