lv2drft
I am attempting to use the Boot 132 (generic.iso) method to install a Leopard 10.5.1 DVD Rip. This one was already converted to ISO by the uploader, which I burned with Windows. It is the new installation DVD copy, not the combo update or restore disc, etc. I burned it at 4X on a DL DVD, the lowest setting possible. I'm also downloading the 10.5.6 DVD Rip, which is a .dmg, and I'll use TransMac to burn to the proper format. However, I have a feeling that the new one I'm downloading now will have the same problem (many users reported this problem but didn't get an answer on TPB). But if you're familiar with either of these releases, please let me know what procedure I should use with that release to fix my problem. With that said, know that I will most definitely purchase Leopard, but I want to make sure it will work on my PC before spending the money (can't return opened software). Ok, here's the problem: I turn on the computer with Boot 132 generic, it loads up with no problems. I get to the step where it says enter a numeric value. At this point, I open the DVD drive, replace Boot 132 with my Leopard DVD retail backup copy, wait for the light to stop blinking, and hit enter (as instructed). I then see a blank gray screen with just the Apple logo in the center. I leave the computer on for 4 hours and nothing happens. What should I do? Here's what I'm running: Dell Dimension 1110 desktop pc (all original, non-upgraded except DVDRW drive) DE051 Motherboard Intel 82801EB SMBus Controller - 24D3 Intel 82865G Graphics Controller Intel Celeron CPU 2.53GHz, SSE2 and SSE3 compatible 512MB Ram ATAPI iHAP422 8 DVDRW drive Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/192944-dell-dimension-1110-stuck-at-gray-apple-screen-right-after-boot-132-swap/ Share on other sites
lv2drft
Well the 10.5.6 I just downloaded, burned at slowest settings with TransMac, and double-checked to make sure the MD5 checksums were the same did the SAME thing, as I expected. Somebody please help, because there are many of us with this same problem. All I can find in the previous forum topics is after install, but in this situation, it's BEFORE install. Thanks in advance and thanks for the wonderful website! lv2drft
Can anyone help us out? I've honestly spent HOURS going through forum posts looking for an answer. People get an answer for POST install gray screen hang-ups, but these solutions don't work for PRE install. I've seen this question asked before, but it never got any replies (and wasn't for the retail copy, it was for distros) So if you can answer this question, you will not only be helping me, but countless others who have the same problem... lv2drft
Just to help out others, I'll post what I did and how it is working. I noticed on many forum topics that they say if you want to install VANILLA kext, you need to have a Intel DUAL CORE CPU.. its actually called the Dual Core.. if you're not sure if your's is dual core, then you definitely don't have one. I went ahead and assumed that since I was attempting a retail rip install, that would be considered extra vanilla :-) So I went on to Kalyway 10.5.2. It first installed in blurry, dithered, black and white. Simple BIOS change fixed that (search forums for Dell 1100 bios 8MB) Found some simple instructions on how to update to 10.5.7.. got to 10.5.4, and when I tried to update to 10.5.5, the computer would constantly freeze up anywhere from 15-90 percent complete. I decided screw this, since I still had 3 similar steps to go to update. I guess there are a lot of major changes, new kexts, etc you need to do to update from that far back. Even worse, after it freezes, it won't restart since it was 1/2 way installed (everything corrupted). I've since learned that you may be able to use your Kalyway (or whatever distro you choose) DVD to only re-install kexts, but I went ahead with the wipe clean method 3 times before giving up. Then I tried ToH. I was pretty sure I downloaded the 10.5.5 version, but tried to make sure by going to "About this Mac" which doing so resulted in a crash and restarted the desktop. Nothing ever came up. Went to XBench to see what version it said I had. It just said 10.5. Researched it.. got confused because I think it was something called "Flat install". Either way it looked like it was outdated.. so I spent no more time down that path... If I knew what version it was, I would have attempted updating it with my (luckily) disk of updates, etc I burned. Which brings me to right now. Tons of pages of forum posts (most of them time wasting, but still enough to make it worthwhile) later, I stumbled across iDeneb 1.6 lite. I decided screw the updates all together and searched TPB for 10.5.8. This one was the only that came up newest leo without updates needed. Currently crossing my fingers... but I do have another question if anybody cares to help a little--- How do you determine exactly what stuff I'm supposed to select for my machine? I mean I understand its "get what you need for your system" but how should I go about finding this information? ...They way this post has been replied-to, I'm starting to think the trial and error method will get me an answer faster than waiting for a reply.. just kidding... somewhat.. I know we help each other out of the goodness of our own money-saving hearts. Let me get a lil' pity from someone else who has a dream of creating an iPhone app like me, and just doesn't have the cash to spend on a Mac :-) With that said, I'll go ahead and post my results on this thread in case it helps anyone else. HAHAHAHAA. Back to my original problem again.. Now iDeneb 1.6 lite freezes at the gray apple screen with a spinning wheel and a circle with a line through it... Isn't irony a {censored}! I'll search around a little to see what boxes I should tick on the "Customize" part or boot verbose with chameleon 2 I wonder if chameleon 2 is whats doing it.. man I'm confused Time for more post searching...
