Dell Studio 15 - Detailed Tutorial

Sorry for bumping this old topic but I had a couple of questions.

 

What size is actually needed for the Mac OSX install using Leo4allv3? I ask because I cannot make a primary partition on my HD, it already has 3 x primary 1 x logical (which means you cannot make another primary). Thus I need to either buy an external hard drive to backup all my data and wipe the logical partition, or install this to a flash drive in which case I need to know what size flash drive to buy.

Ahhhh here we are again, reading yet another thread on how to install osx86 for your newest pc......yet again expecting to waste a weekend with absolutely no results to show for it.

 

Well, actually, this time, it WORKS!

 

I recently bought a Dell Studio 15 with the following specs:

 

Pentium® Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2 GHz

4GB RAM

Intel HD Audio

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570

 

 

At the moment i am installing the iDeneb 10.5.8 Combo update kit and will let you know on the graphics card improvements associated with the update.

 

[EDIT] The combo update worked fine however when i booted, the graphics card went really funny.....so i had to boot into safe mode and delete ATIRadeonX2000.kext to boot properly. So 10.5.8, but no QE/CI or native res. yet

 

 

Ok so lets begin, you want to try and get yourself an install disk, most certainly not named Leo4AllV3.

 

My studio came with Windows Vista Home Premium and other Dell Partitions including a RECOVERY and something else. To make room for OSX86, you need to go to disk managment. So Start>Right Click My Computer>Manage>select from the left Disk Managment.

 

Next right lick your C drive and click Shrink volume, it will analyze your disk and tell you how much it can be shrunk by. You be suprised at how small this is. I had 210GB free on my C drive hwoever could only shrink by 70GB. This is due to fragmentation. If you want, degfragment the drive to increase this 'shrink value'.

 

Now click ok to shrink the volume.

 

From here i had the problem that the new partiton vista created was an extended logical thingy (green border in disk mangment console), this WONT let you install OSX.

 

So you need to download G-PARTED or another partitioner software and delete the partition before recreating it as a primary partition in the FAT(32) filesystem. IF you have left all Dell's standard partitions as i had, then this will be your fourth primary partition.

 

 

Once you have a disk, most certainly not called Leo4AllV3, you put it of course in your laptop. Once you have turned it on, press F12 to enter boot options, now on the studio, the media controls take precedence over the function buttons, however at this stage of the boot they don't so no need to hold the Fn button down.

 

Next select DVD drive from the boot list.

 

You will now be faced with a countdown timer saying press F8 for Darwin Boot Options. Don't. Just wait till it hits zero then wait for the DVD to boot.

 

Once it has been booted you will see a language selection screen. No prizes for guessing what we do here! Select your language and click continue. Once the installation has loaded, select from the top bar DISK UTILITIES.

 

Once this App has loaded, select your partition you created from the left and then click the erase tab. Choose the OSX Journaled filesystem (cant remember exactly what it is called), name your partition and click erase.

 

Now for the installing, close disk utility and click continue accepting the agreement. Select your install location however DONT click INSTALL. Click instead CUSTOMIZE on the left.

 

From the list, you need to check EVERY Kernel, this is because im not sure which one is used but clicking every kernel ensures a perfect system for me......

 

Then in third party drivers, select the Intel ICHX chipset (or something like that), also you need to select powermanagment bundle. Leave everything else as it is. DONT INSTALL ANY GRAPHICS SOUND NETWORK OR OTHER DRIVERS.

 

Wonderful. Now you can install!

 

just skip the disk check, it should be fine.

 

Note: The install will appear frozen for the first 10 minutes or so however after this the blue bar will move VERY quickly completeing the installation in around 20 minutes overall. Ignore the times, mine said 6 hours remaining :s

 

Restart!

 

You will find that your laptop reboots into the Darwin bootloader, this is fine, if you want, press enter during the countdown and boot from the partition named OS. This will take you back into vista with absolutely no problems:)

 

However, for us, dont press anything and it will boot into OSX!

 

Go through the setup wizard - make sure you select this computer doesn't connect to the internet. You will also find when selecting your display picture that the WEBCAM WORKS!

 

Now you have setup dont be tempted to play around. not just yet. Don't want anything going wrong!

 

Linked at the bottom of this post is a thread with a link to a driver pack for the studio. This is partly very helpfull.

 

Open this pack in leopard. In here are some drivers for certain things on your studio. These are:

 

Card Reader - havnt tested

Wireless Card

Audio - dont use!

Ethernet - havn't actually tested

 

Now first off, go into the useful apps folder and open Kext Helper B7.

 

Now go back into the card reader folder and drag the kext into the Kext Helper App.

Now you want to download the next link which is at the bottom of this post which is an audio kext.

 

Unzip it and drag that into Kext Helper aswell.

Now enter your password and click EASY INSTALL.

 

Now reboot.

 

Hopefully it now works

 

Right, for the wireless. Go into the wireless folder and drag the script onto the desktop. It's called: bcm43xx_enabler.sh

 

Now open terminal ( Applications>Utilities>Terminal ) and type the following pressing enter after each line.

cd /User/{USERNAME}/Dekstop

sudo ./bcm43xx_enabler.sh

 

 

You will now be warned about improper use blah de blah, enter your password and hit enter.

 

Now somthing will pop up saying airport device recognized. ignore this and reboot.

 

You should now have working, card reader, audio and wireless.

 

If you want ethernet, just follow the instructions in the driver pack.

 

And that is IT!
