whiskas
this is really very general info about the setup. its great that airport card gets recognized and u have the icon up at the top etc. etc. so i am assuming you have ur router close enough. how about you just start with basic steps ? like setup your routers wifi for no encryption and to let it broadcast your ssid etc. just to see if this time it will find your wireless network. if it does find your wifi then you can keep going on by enabling your encryption first and so on. sorry, i wish i could point out what the problem is exactly, but with too generalized info you give thats what i can suggest for now.
