I have been searching many guides on this forum because I plan to install OSX. I am a photographer willing to switch to mac but I prefer to try it first to see if I can live without windows.

The problem is that most of you describe installation of two systems on one drive. But wouldn't it be easier to install windows on one HDD and OSX on another?

I have two drives and each one of them has a separate on/off power switch (made by me). This is my old tried way of making backups and making sure that drives last long. One drive has XP and runs all the time, whereas the backup one is turned on only when I want to backup pictures. I don't want it to spin when I don't need it. My idea is to do a similar thing with operating systems. I would switch the OSX drive to on and switch off the XP drive, start the computer and have no dual booting issues.

Is my idea (below) of installation correct?

1. Download the ISO image

2. Delete whole partition on HDD (I also do an fdisk /mbr to make sure nothing resides)

3. Create partition with 'diskpart' on the unallocated space.

4. Boot from the patched DVD (created with the .iso image) and follow the instructions.

Why do I have to make an almost 7GB partition (create partition primary size=6690 id=af)? Can I use all my HDD space just to have one big partition for the system and data?

Many people constantly install updates and some lots of stuff. Do I also need to know all these things? I just need to run a new Apple photography program to try it for a while.

From what I've read my hardware is compatible:

CPU: Celeron 320 Prescott (2.4GHz)- Instructions: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3

Motherboard: ASUS P4P800S-X, chipset Intel, southbridge Intel

Graphics: Radeon 9200

Will I succeed?

Sounds fine. Make sure the Mac drive is set active during the diskpart creation. Also, setup your bootloader to find the MacOS drive.

You don't. Use it all

You and we are doing something unintended. The software is not set up to work with our hardware. Patches are required. You probably will need to do some.

Thank you for the reply. I've just started downloading the image file and I hope it will go well. I'm glad to know that I can use my drive the usual way, that is one partition for system and data that uses all the available space on the HDD. I was puzzled because many people told stories of problems with resizing partitions, about the necessity to make yet another image of the installed system and then reinstall etc... Good to know that I won't have to go through all of this.
