Colonel Sanderson
Hello, I'd like to try setting up a win-mac-linux multi boot system on my laptop. I have never set up a dual-boot or triple boot system. I've looked around and found a few tutorials, but most of them assume I already have knowledge of bootloaders and the linux command line etc. Or they are very out of date. What I will be using: Laptop: Everex Stepnote SA2052T (80GB hard drive) OS's: Windows 7 iATKOS v7 Kubuntu 9.04 Here's my process so far. First I used a utility from the Ultimate Boot CD to partition the drive as best I could. It has an 80GB hard drive, so I partitioned it into 3 20 GB partitions for each of the OS's, leaving the remaining 20 GB for shared storage. Then I installed Windows 7 to the first partition. Everything went smoothly. In disk management, the partitions all showed correctly. Next I went to install Kubuntu, but it didn't recognize that there was a partition table on the drive at all, so I aborted that. I then booted up iATKOS, it also didn't see any partition table. I decided to go ahead with the installation. Using the iATKOS Disk Utility, I partitioned the drive out again in the same way, except I put Mac OS on the first partition this time. Installation went smoothly. However, upon trying to boot into Mac OS, it would show the Apple logo and the little Apple version of the hourglass, and just hang there. So I decided to go ahead and install Kubuntu. I set up the FAT32 partition I had set aside for Kubuntu and installed. Kubuntu starts up perfectly well, but the GRUB bootloader only shows Kubuntu, no Mac OS. I'd like the end result of this experiment to be a collaborative tutorial. If anyone has any advice or can point me towards some helpful tuts, I'll post my results. vilpostus
http://liveinformant.com/software/triple-b...ckintosh-guide/ Some notes. Then creating partitions in Windows, use FAT for OS X partition. Then formate it to HFS+ in OS X disk utility. You may also use GRUB as a boot manager instead the Chameleon. But in this case you need to add its' menu entry GRUB manually. Colonel Sanderson
Thanks! Here's what's happened so far: Installed Windows successfully, was able to partition the drives without any problems. Installed Mac OS (seemingly) without any problems. This is where I'm stuck with two problems. 1. When booting into Mac OS, it starts to load, then I get a message that simply says I have to restart the computer. 2. When I boot into Windows, I get an error message saying BOOT MGR NOT FOUND, which is to be expected. I followed the instructions by booting the Windows disc again and selecting the Startup Repair. The automatic repair fails, however. vilpostus
1. When booting into Mac OS, it starts to load, then I get a message that simply says I have to restart the computer.Boot with -v flag to see why.2. When I boot into Windows, I get an error message saying BOOT MGR NOT FOUND, which is to be expected. I followed the instructions by booting the Windows disc again and selecting the Startup Repair. The automatic repair fails, however. Use a manual repair instead. http://www.ehow.com/how_4836283_repair-mbr-windows.html Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/189763-need-help-setting-up-triple-boot-system/#findComment-1286043 Share on other sites

After restarting after the manual repair, I no longer get a bootloader. So I loaded the iATKOS DVD again and reinstalled the Chameleon bootloader like in the How To, and it's back to where it was: selecting "Windows NTFS" simply gives the message "BOOTMGR not found." Also, I might should note that when going into the windows system repair, it asks me to select an OS, but none show up. It gives me the option to load my hard disk drivers, but I don't know where those are. EDIT: I just tried bootrec using the /RebuildBcd option, and it found the installation of windows on D: and asked if I wanted to add it to the boot list, and I said yes. It returned an error message that said D: had an unrecognized file system. Just to make sure, I started the iATKOS disk utility, which says that partition is in fact formatted as NTFS. Weird. vilpostus
On windows http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864...oot-record.html On KP... Don't know... Try cpus=1 flag maybe. May try installing using this http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...96552&st=20 and http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...96552&st=20 guide as a base (to get idea about what options to select) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/189763-need-help-setting-up-triple-boot-system/#findComment-1286865 Share on other sites
Colonel Sanderson
Partial success: Windows will now boot from Chameleon, I followed the instructions on the first post here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=165878 except for using diskpart, it wouldn't even see the Mac OS partition, so I did it in the Terminal from the iATKOS DVD. So now I am able to boot windows from Chameleon with no problem. Woot! During this process I started completely from scratch, using the Win7 installation to partition the drive, installing Win7. Then I installed Mac OS on the second partition (actually third since windows has that 100 MB system reserved thing) but I didn't install Chameleon until after manually updating the MBR in the terminal. In short, Mac OS doesn't lock up during the boot any more. NOW the problem is this: After booting, Mac OS gives me just a light blue screen and endlessly plays "Ice Cream Parlour" by Liquid People. From what I understand, there is supposed to be an intro video here, but it's not showing up, and the only way to get out of this is to power off the laptop. EDIT: I installed all the VGA drivers from the iATKOS DVD. Then it said "No Keyboard Connected," so I installed the keyboard/mouse drivers from the DVD. Now I get the menu to select my country, but the keyboard and mouse don't work. EDIT 2: Hooked up a USB mouse, which worked, and it turns out the keyboard works too. So now I need to find where I can get drivers for the trackpad, and also the display, which only has one resolution option right now.
