If you're using a GMA 900 chipset, this is a known issue and I believe there are patches out there, some available on the patched ISOs that float around, most noteably the 10.4.6 jas image.

I have a GMA 900 chipset and get around the problem by pressing the keyboard buttons that activate/deactivate the external monitor while booting. The laptop still thinks it has an external monitor attached but it comes up fine.

There are a couple threads out there for people with the same problem, but, between the hack that DiaboliK posted, finding and trying the patch, and playing with the monitor activation/deactivation keys, I think those are your options.

But, hey, give the forum search a try.
