altoidboy
I've done searches here but am still having a lot of trouble getting audio to work on my Hack, built using a Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L according to instructions here: http://lifehacker.com/5351485/how-to-build...start-to-finish I installed 10.6 then software updated to 10.6.1, and in general the OS appears to be working great. When I open the Sound control panel, it shows no input or output devices. When I go to System Profiler > Audio, I see: Device ID: 0x1458A002 Audio ID: 12 Available Devices: Line Out: Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack External Microphone: Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack External Microphone: Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack Headphone: Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack S/P-DIF Out: Connection: 1/8-Inch Jack I also tried to launch Audio MIDI Setup but only the Audio Devices page comes up and it says "No Devices Found". (MIDI devices don't show up at all...weird...is that something else broken?) I actually don't need built-in audio to work, and would prefer to use a third-party soundcard (Tascam US-1641). I googled for US-1641 drivers and did find drivers specifically written for Snow Leopard, so downloaded and installed them. But the US-1641 isn't seen by the OS nor by the Tascam controller application. I'm new to the OSx86 world so please be gentle. Any pointers to places to research or basic things to try would be really appreciated. Thanks! After several attempts to reinstall, I finally got it working. My steps were as follows: 1. Install per the instructions, but do not install any kexts that they recommend. 2. I used OSX86Tools to install my video card in the EFI string and to add -x32 to the boot.plist. At this time, the System Profiler shows what you see in the audio. 3. Reboot (I had to boot off the USB drive to start Snow Leopard on my hard drive.) 4. I installed the FakeSMC.kext, PlatformUUID.kext, OpenHaltRestart.kext, Apple3Com3C90x.kext and IONetworkingFamily.kext. 5. I rebooted again (I had to boot off the USB drive to start Snow Leopard on my hard drive.) 6. I followed the instructions to install the Chameleon software to boot off my hard drive like the guide said. 7. I booted straight off the hard drive. 8. I went to the System Profiler and under Built in Audio, it said nothing. 9. I installed this file http://an43.com/osx/files/Realtek_ALC883_Audio.dmg I did not get his kext to work, but I am not saying that it won't. 10. It worked before I rebooted. 11. I did the software update and it still works. 12. It still says nothing under the Built In Audio, but under the sound preferences it says HD audio. Unfortunately, when it doesn't work it doesn't work (most likely because I don't know much about Apple). I had to reinstall several times before I found the right sequence. Maybe you can just install those drivers and it will work. I had to reinstall the whole thing to remove whatever it was that I didn't know I needed to remove. If you have any questions, PM me. I don't know much, but am willing to help. I too did a bunch of searching, but could not find what I needed. Hopefully my hours will help someone else. altoidboy
Thanks for your tips, Fabucci. I ended up giving up, and ordered a different motherboard (EP45-UD3P) that is certified to work (bit.ly/GFE66). I installed it last night and now, it definitely does fully work! I ended up returning the GA-G3M-ES2L so I guess I'm out of that game for now...until I try the next one... The real pisser was the fact it worked in 10.5.x and that really bothered me. Good luck.
