tacoofabudda
I have had 10.5.6 running perfectly for months. I recently installed windows 7. Now (even though I was careful not to overwright my HFS+ partition) the Windows installer set me NTFS Partition as active. (Dumb mistake, I know.) Anyway, I don't know how to set an HFS+ partition as active again in windows...nor do I know of a boot disk that can do the job. Ideas anyone? Thanks in advance. P.S. I know the partitions are still there. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/188075-set-hfs-active-in-windows/ Share on other sites
kidnexus
i did something similar. thinking i could just make the osx partition the "active" partition, i made it active using the disk management tool in windows. now the system is thinks my osx partition is formatted to ntfs, when it hasnt been. i'm starting to wonder if i just completely hosed my osx installation, which sucks because i would love to get on there and at least recover a few pieces of data. i would imagine if someone knows how to fix your problem, it may be able to help me as well. maybe Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/188075-set-hfs-active-in-windows/#findComment-1275959 Share on other sites

kidnexus
yeah. i've got macdrive 8 and its not picking up the drive correctly in windows. i'm guessing because its recoginizing the drive as ntfs now as well. i'm just a bit confused as to why all of a sudden its being recognized as ntfs when all i did was set it as an active partition. it wasnt formatted or repartitioned. Weird; try running the corrupt drive tool in acronis disk director suite Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/188075-set-hfs-active-in-windows/#findComment-1276054 Share on other sites
srs5694
To both of you: You should specify whether you're using MBR or GPT partitioning scheme. Although only MBR has an "active" flag, there are disk utilities, such as GNU Parted and its GUI cousins, that try to cram the MBR model over GPT, and so can make it look like there's an MBR "active flag" on GPT disks. The results are usually disastrous. If you're willing to venture out of Windows, at least in the form of an emergency CD, you could try System Rescue CD or Parted Magic. These are Linux-based emergency disks with low-level disk utilities. I recommend Linux fdisk for MBR disks and my own GPT fdisk (command name gdisk) for GPT disks. Both tools give you access to low-level constructs such as the active flag (fdisk calls it the "bootable flag") and the GPT partition type codes (which is what GNU Parted likes to corrupt). More broadly speaking, the usual problem with an inability to boot after installing Windows isn't anything to do with partitions being marked or unmarked as "active;" it's that Windows overwrites the first-stage boot loader in the MBR. The solution is to reinstall that boot loader, or install a new one in its place. Look for posts in this forum on OSx86 boot loaders, such as Chameleon, PC-EFI, or Boot Think. You should be able to recover, possibly using Windows tools, or at least using your OSx86 install DVD and its Terminal option. rolly123
Hi! Exactly the same problem: I have marked the LEOPARD partition "active" with Windows Vista (shame on me!!). Now it is not possible to start the LEOPARD partition again. I am using Windows now (repaired with Install DVD). MacDrive shows me the LEOPARD partition and I can see all my data. But when I boot the PC with Kalyway Install/Boot DVD, and I have a look at the Terminal ("diskutil list"), I see, that the LEOPARD partition is still NTFS (the whole disk is NTFS_partition_schmema). I can't activate it with "Harddisc Service Tool" and I do not know, how to repair my dual boot PC. I can't imagine that it is really difficult. But I don't really know much about EFI GUID MBR and all the things I have found... Do you have helpful tips? Thanks a lot! rolly123
and now the very very very very very simple solution: http://blog.the-skylab.de/2009/03/27/fixhf...comment-page-1/ cu Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/188075-set-hfs-active-in-windows/#findComment-1281344 Share on other sites
