Still no Quartz Extreme, still get Mouse Tearing on radeon 9550

I've searched hundreds of threads on this forum regarding Quartz Extreme and Mouse Tearing, and after following instructions in many threads, I still can't get my Radeon 9550 to play ball.

Most of these threads are quite old, and many of the solutions are for Tiger, not Leopard.

After installing iPC 10.5.6 on a Pentium 4 Northwood with SSE2, with a Radeon 9550 AGP 256MB Graphics Card, I could only get the card to output 1024 x 768, which looked horrible on my 22" LCD which has a native resolution of 1680 x 1050.

After following instructions on many threads, I edited "ATIRadeon9700.kext" and "ATIRadeon9700GA.plugin" files and added the Device ID of my card to their info.plist files.

After deleting "Extensions.mkext", Repairing Permissions and rebooting, I still couldn't get any resolution higher than 1024 x 768, or enable Quartz Extreme.

I followed instructions in another thread and edited "com.apple.boot.info.plist" and added "Graphics Mode" and "1680x1050x32@60", then Repaired Permissions and rebooted again.

This time I got a higher resolution of 1280 x 1024, but still no Quartz Extreme, and still got Mouse Tearing.

After following more threads, I downloaded the file "ATI_9550_C008_AGP.zip" from the Tutorials (Genius Bar).

This is the Callisto 008 drivers that have already been edited for the Radeon 9550.

After installing them and rebooting, I finally had 1680 x 1050 resolution and my graphics card is now recognized as a Radeon 9550 AS.

I still have no Quartz Extreme and still get Mouse Tearing.

I then installed OSx86Tools and enabled QuartzGL (thinking this was the same as Quartz Extreme), so now I have QuartzGL, but still no Quartz Extreme.

I also checked "ATIRadeon9700GA.plugin", and checked that "IOProviderClass" was set to "CallistoFB".

Another thread about Mouse Tearing suggests to edit "ATIRadeon9700.kext" and change "ATIUseTearingWideBlit" from false to true, which I did, but still get Mouse Tearing.

Eventually, after following another thread, I installed "MouseLocator.app" and the transparent "MouseLocator.png" file, set the Trigger Delay and Display Time to 1s.

I still get a bit of Mouse Tearing, but not as much as before, but the mouse pointer now seems a little sluggish than before, so still not ideal.

So after reading many threads, I still can't enable Quartz Extreme, and still can't get rid of Mouse Tearing on my Radeon 9550 in OS X Leopard.

Would it be easier to just replace the Radeon 9550 AGP card with an nVidia card, or is there one more trick I could try to finally enable Quartz Extreme and eliminate Mouse Tearing completely.

From reading many threads, I understand that the reason I get an -70017 error when I try to run DVD Player, is because I don't have Quartz Extreme enabled, is this correct?

Is your graphics card showing up as PCI or AGP in System Profiler? I had an old computer back in the early 10.4 days with the same problem. Mine was showing as PCI, which was causing the problem on my 9800. I fixed mine by using AGPGart. Try this thread:

If that doesn't work, you should consider upgrading. Not much support is around for older cards like that, and if you can't upgrade your motherboard to a PCIe compatible one, AGPGart will most definitely be needed.
