stan0
Hello, what is the latest version of OS X you managed to install on T42? Of course I need to know only about the properly working installations. So far I managed to install kalyway 10.5.1 and update it to 10.5.3. But as probably most of you I need a later version. So I tried with newer releases and successfully installed iPC 10.5.6 and patched it to 10.5.7. It was working ok but it was booting very slow. I mean about 5 minutes. Have you installed 10.5.7/10.5.8/10.6 ? Which method did you use? Which release? Thank you! stan0
I managed to install 10.5.8. Everything works except the video drivers - I still need to fix them. But the system is usable ... if you don't want to watch movies or play games And another small problem - boot time is about 4-5-6 minutes So the things I did to are as follows: 1) install iPC 10.5.6 2) update 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 using this method and iDeneb 10.5.7 combo update (I hope it's not against the rules to post such links) 3) update 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 using this method and iDeneb 10.5.8 combo update. For some reason apple delta and combo update didn't work - broken package error or something like this. And that's all. I now have 10.5.8 and still need to fix the video drivers but decided this guide could be useful. I also hope this would work on similar hardware. [edit] Video is properly detected now. It's possible to watch movies. But no games - no quartz extreme and opengl. [/edit] P.S. I am sorry for the consecutive post but I decided it would be more obvious there's a result for the people who already read the thread than just edit my first post. wallacel
I got 10.5.8 installed on my Thinkpad T42 as well, boot up time is less than a minute. Install iPC 10.5.6 Voodoo Kernel 9.5 Chipset Drivers -> LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA drivers Drivers: Video - none Audio - AC97 Ethernet - Intel PRO 100/VE Wireless - Broadcom (I replaced the stocked wifi) USB Drivers -> Patched USB Drivers Power Management Package Fixes and patched: IOPCI Seatbelt.kext 10.5.5 PS2 Mouse fix ACPI Fix CPUS=1 One Core Fix IntelCPUPMDisabler Patch DSDT ApleSMBIOS ToH Applications - All Update to 10.5.8 using iDeneb 10.5.8 Update Combo: Install Disabler.kext (link) & dsmos.kext (link) via OSXTools Reboot and make sure it works Create backup of extensions folder: sudo cp -rf /System/Library/Extensions /System/Library/Extensions_old Open Terminal & OSXTools & Finder first (otherwise you won't be able to do so later) Start combo update and don't reboot Restore extensions: cp -r Extensions Extensions.backup2 rm -rf Extensions cp Extensions_old Extensions rm -rf Extensions.mkext Open osx86tools >>> Check repair permissions >>> Set kext permissions >>> Clear extensions cache >>> Restart. Then you got a 10.5.8 system running on 10.5.6 extensions. To have a 1400x1050x32 resolution display: boot in safe mode (-x) cd /System/Library/Extension rm -rf ATI* reboot No QE/GL though And sleeping not working, u need to disable Speedstep in bios, otherwise system won't boot on battery. stan0
Thank you for the guide!!! It worked great for me. Boot time is really less than a minus which is absolutely great, compared to the previous - 5 minutes. However, I had some issues during update to 10.5.8. - The first time I tried it, backing up and restoring Extensions didn't work - sudo didn't accept my password and I couldn't replace the new extensions. After second installation I typed sudo commands during update process so it didn't "forget" my password. - OSX86Tools also didn't work - I received error on each action I tried to make. So after update I simply restarted with only replaced extension but then: - I had to restore the 10.5.6 kernel after the update (good that I had backup) After this it booted and everything worked fine, except the battery meter. I tried to install it again from the installation dvd, but this only seem to messed the extensions. So I restored them again (from the 10.5.6 backup)... and then the meter was working again. The only issue I have now is that I can't tap the touchpad to "click". I tried to reinstall the ps2MouseFix from DVD and UpdateTool which came with the combo updater but it worked fine only after the first restart. After the second restart it stopped working - I can't tap anymore. Even the Mouse tab in Preferences disappeared. This happened twice. I guess that if I reinstall the PS2MouseFix it will work again but just until the next restart. Joystick's middle button also doesn't work, but it hasn't ever worked, so I guess it's not quite possible. Disabling Speedstep also made the laptop boot without power adapter. Unfortunately the QE/GL won't work because my 7500M doesn't support OpenGL2. Fortunately QTPlayer managed to play a video(.avi) and it seemed to play it fine. I also used Perian for subtitles and it worked. Youtube videos run fine up to and including 480p. Above that is almost a slideshow Once again - Thank you! P.S. One more thing - I used random dsmos.kext, found somewhere in the net, using google. I think it was from 2008.
