Gabriel Simões
Hello, I´ve been away from the community for a while but since I got away from my job I have time to get back to software development and for this I need a pretty good hackintosh up and running. From the time I´ve been apart I see a lot of changes, including retail installation procedures (pure or almost pure vanilla) for intel and amd. But there are some requirements that do not fit my needs so I´m asking for an advice about one or two ideas to know if they would work, or what should I do. First, by what I saw, retail Leopard will only install on GUID partitions but for professional reasons I have to keep my windows installation as it is today. Can´t even make a backup, and by what I´ve read installing windows xp on a GUID partitioned HD is a pain in the ass. What I thought: 1- Modify the retail Leopard ISO so it installs on a MBR partitioned HD: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=116505 (single layer) 2- Create a boot-132 disc or add the initrd.img to the process described in 1 (don´t know which would be better). 3- Since I wont have the EFI partition (remember, MBR partitioned HD, not GUID) for the boot loader + extensions (I want to be able to use software update) I was thinking about creating a simple fat32 partition manually and use it the same way as described in munky´s tutorial - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=127330) Is it possible? Theoretically, does it work? Any tip or anything I should modify to get everything working in an easier way? Thx, Gabriel Simões ps: right now I have a leo4all v4.1 up and running well. Not using voodoo kernel. ps2: I want the retail because I need to update my os to 10.5.8 and leo4all is "dead" (ppl working on SL). Have heard about the ideneb upgrade kit but saw a lot of people complaining about problems with it. ps3: system:DELL Vostro 1000 + Turion x2 TL-50, Via chipset (sb400), sata HD, dell 1450 wifi, ... Gabriel Simões
Any comments, ideas, other ways to archive the same objective? Mostly about step 3. Have doubts if it will work. Please, any help will be appreciated. scorcho
as far as i understand it, if you have an AMD system you will never be able to use a vanilla install. you have to use a modified kernel that supports AMD. Gabriel Simões
Yes scorcho, you are right. It´s not vanilla since I will use voodoo kernel. The main thing is to do a install from an almost retail disc (single layer, mbr, etc) and maintain the added extensions and boot loader in another partition. The thing here is: will step 1 work? will it be better to make a separate bootable cd or create a bootable dvd? Since I can´t reformat my HD using GUID, will the same method pointer by munky (to install kexts and a modified bootloader on the EFI partition) if I use a MBR formated HD and create a separate partition for kexts and chameleon?
