modifiedminds
hello. i have an e1705 laptop running 10.5.2 and its running perfectly with all hardware recognized and full graphics support. now this took me a long time to accomplish and i really dont want to jeopordize that. BUT id love to update to the newest version and use software update without worry. after reading, it seems that the EFI system is what makes this possible. so i have a few questions... how plausable is it for me to install EFI? is it possible it will break my system? will it allow me to use the software update to update to the newest version of osx? is it even worth doing? and lastly if its yes to all of those things where is a good place to find a guide to do it? thank you for your time reading this and i hope someone has some answers for me : ) allen Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/179965-advice-on-installing-efi-please/ Share on other sites

westwaerts
come on guys? nobody? i find that hard to believe... -there is a wiki, osxproject, for hardware compatibility questions -you need a bootloader ( PC EFI, Cameleon, 123, etc.) otherwise you wont be able to run OSX ( search function here, could lead you to someone, already installed something, you might like, and do it again) -nice laptop, you have, but do you know, whats inside ? ( if you go on asking round here, its better to speak in the components, cause there are millions of laptops, with billions of components) we find it hard to believe that you speak before you read, that is respectless and offending to everyone in here maybe you want to modify your mind before you come here, as your nic promises Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/179965-advice-on-installing-efi-please/#findComment-1227486 Share on other sites
srs5694
hello. i have an e1705 laptop running 10.5.2 and its running perfectly with all hardware recognized and full graphics support. now this took me a long time to accomplish and i really dont want to jeopordize that. BUT id love to update to the newest version and use software update without worry. after reading, it seems that the EFI system is what makes this possible. so i have a few questions... how plausable is it for me to install EFI? Not very -- but I think you misunderstand something. The Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) is basically a next-generation BIOS. Apple uses it in their Intel-based Macs, and it's starting to be offered as an alternative to the legacy BIOS on some other x86-64 systems, too. Few commodity PCs offer EFI as an option, though, so chances are your e1705 laptop doesn't have an EFI option. (Is that the Dell e1705? You don't specify the manufacturer.) One of the challenges in getting OS X working on commodity hardware is that most of it isn't built atop EFI, it's built atop legacy BIOS. Thus, boot loaders such as Chameleon implement enough of the EFI functionality to get OS X booted and working. The terminology can get confusing at this point, since some of these boot loaders use "EFI" in their names (such as PC_EFI), and people talk about modifying EFI settings, etc. Now, as to upgrades, they're always risky. To play it safe, your best bet is to not attempt upgrades. Your second-best bet is to research the upgrade with respect to whatever OSx86 system you're running (iPC, Kalyway, etc.), back up your system, and proceed with whatever directions you've found. is it possible it will break my system? will it allow me to use the software update to update to the newest version of osx? is it even worth doing? and lastly if its yes to all of those things where is a good place to find a guide to do it? This isn't an EFI issue. To answer your question with respect to OSx86 upgrades generally: Yes, you could break your system; you can sometimes get away with using Software Update, but that will sometimes break your system; how worthwhile it is depends on your specific needs; and you'll need to find a guide for your specific distribution (iPC, Kalyway, etc.). thank you for your time reading this and i hope someone has some answers for me : ) Please ignore the angry angry poster who misread your question and who, ironically, accused you of not reading. mr_christer
you should start by telling us what processor is in your laptop. amd or intel? this has a lot to do with the best strategy to use when updating. it's also important to know which kernel you are using! (open terminal, type "uname -a") don't get too hung up on this efi thing. efi can do nothing more then an injector can do for you (like nvinject or natit) so if natit or nvinject work good for you than you don't have to bother with efi in most cases!
