It all started when I tried resizing my OS X partition with GParted. After I did that, I was unable to boot at all (it would hang at the BIOS). I figured I probably broke my bootloader so I tried installing a new one. That kinda worked, but it would take a really long time to boot. After I did that, my external USB hard drive wouldn't so much as be detected in the System Profiler. I decided to completely reinstall, so I did that and restored from my Time Machine backup. Now I have everything working again, but my USB drive still isn't getting detected in System Profiler or Disk Utility.

Is this a problem with some broken .kext or something?

I am having the same problem after my update from 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 - I am running a D805 with the voodoo kernel. USB disks only mount if they are plugged in during startup. I swapped back in my old seatbelt kext to stop the kernel panic when mounting disk images, and to try to get the USB stick to mount I attempted to swap in my old IOUSBfamily.kext, but it did not solve the problem. Are there any other kexts I should look to swap back to solve this problem?

Like Seatbelt.kext, System.kext must match kernel version. A non-matching system.kext will cause problems with USB devices for some reason.

So for example if you're running a 9.7.0 kernel on 10.5.8, you need seatbelt and system.kext from 10.5.7.

You can use Pacifist to extract them from the official 10.5.7 combo or delta update.

I opened the DMG in Pacifist, but I don't see any System.kext or seatbelt.kext. I looked in the 10.5.7 delta update and the 10.5.8 combo update.

EDIT: Alright, I found the files (in Payload), but the ones in my Extensions folder are the same as the ones in the 10.5.8 update (9.8.0). I'm guessing that's not my problem then?
