My hard drive suddenly started constantly clicking in 10.5.6. Everything seems to be running normally. The hard drive light however doesn't show the drive being accessed while this particular clicking is occuring. Nothing is running in the background and my CPU usage is around 20% now. It clicks in the same pattern like 5 short clicks then 1 longer click over and over again.

I used to have issues wiwth the drive parking and would run hdrive awake. Now that is no longer necessary. I have no idea whats wrong. I tried restoring a backup of my kexts before the issue occured but that did nothing. Also, please note this problem does not occur in windows so the hard drive is not faulty.

NOTE: it only makes the clicking when the display is active. If i make a hot corner in expose to sleep display it stops and also it stop when the screen shuts off from being idle.

I did upgrade my video drivers and no longer have mouse tearing/artifacts. It seems like I fixed one thing and screwed up another.

System Specs

Dell Inspiron E1505

GMA 950

Leopard 10.5.6

iPC

Everything working (except hard drive issue)

Print Out of my startup.... any suggestions?

Im getting this on an older WD 40GB i put in to hold my Win7 partition (because it likes to {censored} about not being active partition lol) and it would click non stop for no reason when there was no IO to the drive at all. Often times it would even kernel panic my system for no good reason. Maybe [but i doubt it] its because it is a second hard drive that is detectable by OS X. As stated by camo here, it does not click in windoze... not even when gaming.
