Thanks to certain tips from this guide here:http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=79526&mode=threaded'>http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=79526&mode=threaded, I was able to get Leopard installed and working on an external hard drive connected to my Inspiron 1420.

Here's exactly what I did:

1) Boot to the iAtkos 5 DVD

I didn't need any special flags, just waited for it to boot up.

2) Ran Format/Partitioned my external drive as an MBR

3) Installed OS X with the following features selected:

EFI

9.2.0 TOH Kernel

Intel AHCI SATA Driver (I have AHCI enabled in my bios)

x86 ACPI

Remove Thermal/Powermanagement

whichever ones were already checked

4) Now the tricky part that I got from that guide, when it's done installing and you try and boot to it, you'll see the grey apple screen followed by a blue screen followed by your screen shutting off. As soon as your screen shuts off, unplug your power cord and wait EXACTLY 11 minutes and 20 seconds, then plug your power cord back in and move your mouse around a bit. I don't know why this works.

5)http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=79526&mode=threaded Check out this guide for how to make it so you dont have to do this everytime. It involves Hot Corners/Sleep/SleepApp. The guide shows you exactly how to do it.

Next, I'd like to try and run software update to see what happens if I can go to 10.5.7. I don't think it will work which is why I used Disk Utility to make a backup image. You can use disk utility to restore the backup image to a drive but it won't be bootable, you'll have to install Chameleon 2 on the drive after you restore to it. You should always have two drives with OS X that way you'll always be able to use the other one to boot into and install Chameleon on the other drive.

UPDATE:

Well, I successfully upgraded to 10.5.7 using the regular software update. Things seem to be working fine. I'll have to test how stable it is because part of me is skeptical that I could have updated my 9.2.0 modified TOH kernel to 10.5.7 so easily. What do you guys think?
