const char*
Hello guys, I originally posted this in the installation forum but I was tired and didn't notice this forum until after I had posted. I was hoping maybe somebody could help me fine tune my OS X installation. First off I'll tell you what I've got going on: OS X distro is iATKOS 10.5.7. CPU is a 2.8 GHz AMD Phenom II 940 X4 with SSE, SSE2, SSE3 and SSE4A. Motherboard is an ASUS M4A78-E. Memory is 8Gb 800 MHz DDR2. Video card is an ATi Radeon 4870 HD (1GB GDDR5). I do want to note that I have OS X installed by itself on a USB hard drive, which I didn't know you could do and I wasn't sure if it was a good idea but it seemed to be a safe bet given that OS X messed up my partitions (Which I recovered with trusty Linux) when I installed it on my internal hard disk. Some other info: I installed the Voodoo 10.5.7 kernel since the installation notes for iATKOS said you'd need to use Voodoo if you use an AMD processor, I also didn't install any Intel/Nvidia/ATi specific drivers. Now for my big list of issues that I'm hoping somebody can help me with. OS X will only run in safe mode and legacy mode. If I run it without the -legacy switch from the Charmeleon loader the kernel will go into a panic and crash about half way (I always use the -v verbose switch). As far as I know -legacy tells OS X to only run in 32-bit mode, but I do know that 64-bit software runs for a fact since I have Vista x64 and Ubuntu Linux x86_64 installed. Also as I noted earlier it will only run in safe mode, otherwise it reboots in the middle of booting up and I don't know why so I can't see if maybe its a problematic kext or something. Next up in my list of problems is that I have no sound, even after kextload'ing VoodooHDA.kext. If I try to kextload -t VoodooHDA.kext it says it loaded successfully but going into System Preferences and choosing VoodooHDA or Sound causes the kernel to panic and instantly reboot. I also tried removing VoodooHDA and alas I still couldn't boot outside of safe mode. My audio devices is a VIA VT1708S HD Onboard Audio and a Logitech 960 USB Audio Headset. It'd be really nice if I could get audio to work on either one of those, if not both. And last but not least I can't get any Radeon drivers to work. I've tried several, including the ATI_HD included with iATKOS but every time OS X finishes booting the screen goes black any my monitor turns off along with a blinking light suggesting that it isn't receiving a signal. I assume OS X finishes booting but I can't be sure since I can't see or hear anything. The monitor is a 19" CRT hooked up to the video card via a DVI-to-VGA adapter (which I've heard causes issues with OS X???). I was able to get back into OS X though by booting into Single-User safe mode and running "rm -rf ATI*.*" in the /System/Library/Extensions directory and Extensions.mtext in /System/Library, or in other words by deleting the ATi drivers. Thanks for any help. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/177390-assored-os-x-problems-video-sound-etc/ Share on other sites
