I have a Mac Mini, MSI Wind and rack-mount server all running retail 10.5.7 OS X (the hackintoshes both use chameleon) but I'm having epic file sharing problems.

The Wind is almost a clone of the Mac Mini, since it uses the old hard disk I swapped out for an SSD. Literally just bunged chameleon on it and away it went, leopard already installed. The Wind and the Mac Mini communicate flawlessly, no problems there.

But the other box is being a pain in the arse, and fails connections. I've installed retail after trying with iatkos v7 and having the same result. It's happened before on that PC, so it was retail time.

However, it's Just Not Working.

A little about the network topology, as I originally suspected it. I've reorganised my network which was in a screwy configuration, properly set up DNS and DHCP via a DD-WRT router - every network device can resolve all other hostnames which previously didn't happen. But this still will not work - the server box will not communicate with the Wind or the Mac Mini unless I use IP addresses, and I want them to work via Finder. Sometimes the server box doesn't even turn up under Finder in the other machines.

Any ideas for the server? If it helps, I had to add the EFI strings for my LAN to the boot plist because Time Machine was claiming it couldn't find a network interface.

Could it be related to Chameleon and the files it uses? The Wind had a specific driver pack but the server is using whatever.

Server specs:

CPU: Intel Q6600

Mobo: MSI P35-NeoFIR - Realtek RTL8168 gigabit ethernet (native support under leopard apparently)

2GB DDR2 667MHz

Ok, it can't possibly have been as simple as this, but I noticed the Wind and MMini both had "Use dynamic global hostname" ticked and their hostname entered in the appropriate field.

Disabled SMB sharing on all devices, set up global dynamic hostname for the server, rebooted, and now the Wind and the MMini can connect to the server via Finder, but the server can't access them, though it can use their screen sharing services.

Halfway there?
